Hi Innie Friend, This explains so much! It turns out that there is a biological explanation for introvert overthinking. This revelation will come as a relief to most introverts. If you’re like me, you’ve probably felt frustrated by out of control thought spirals that keep you up at night. The truth is, an introvert’s tendency to overthink prevents more than just restful sleep. Often, it keeps us from doing what we really and truly want to do. Instead of going up and talking to someone new who’s caught our eye, we think about everything that could go wrong until the moment has passed. Instead of starting a new project that excites us, we replay every instance when we didn’t follow through. Sometimes, we distract ourselves from what we want to do by thinking about all the things we should be doing. We tell ourselves, "I want to go for a walk to clear my mind. But I should be productive, and get to the end of my to-do list first.” As frustrating as all of the above can be, it’s a relief to know that it’s not our fault. There is a biological basis for our obsessive thoughts. We really are wired for worry A 2013 study by Randy Buckner of Harvard University explains why introverts love being inside our head so much. Buckner found evidence that introverts have more gray matter in our prefrontal cortex. Since this is the part of the brain used for abstract thinking and decision making, it makes sense that introverts like to think things through before acting. The problems is, too often our deep thinking turns into overthinking. And then obsession. We wonder, where is the off switch? The off switch Instead of wasting all that extra gray matter on negative thoughts and fears, you’re better off to put it towards more important endeavours - like completing that big and scary project you’ve been working on.
