  103. INTRODUCTION
  104.
  105. We take great pleasure in presenting to the attention of students and
  106. investigators of the Secret Doctrines this little work based upon the
  107. world-old Hermetic Teachings. There has been so little written upon this
  108. subject, not withstanding the countless references to the Teachings in
  109. the many works upon occultism, that the many earnest searchers after the
  110. Arcane Truths will doubtless welcome the appearance of this present
  111. volume.
  112.
  113. The purpose of this work is not the enunciation of any special
  114. philosophy or doctrine, but rather is to give to the students a
  115. statement of the Truth that will serve to reconcile the many bits of
  116. occult knowledge that they may have acquired, but which are apparently
  117. opposed to each other and which often serve to discourage and disgust
  118. the beginner in the study. Our intent is not to erect a new Temple of
  119. Knowledge, but rather to place in the hands of the student a Master-Key
  120. with which he may open the many inner doors in the Temple of Mystery
  121. through the main portals he has already entered.
  122.
  123. There is no portion of the occult teachings possessed by the world which
  124. have been so closely guarded as the fragments of the Hermetic Teachings
  125. which have come down to us over the tens of centuries which have elapsed
  126. since the lifetime of its great founder, Hermes Trismegistus, the
  127. "scribe of the gods," who dwelt in old Egypt in the days when the
  128. present race of men was in its infancy. Contemporary with Abraham, and,
  129. if the legends be true, an instructor of that venerable sage, Hermes
  130. was, and is, the Great Central Sun of Occultism, whose rays have served
  131. to illumine the countless teachings which have been promulgated since
  132. his time. All the fundamental and basic teachings embedded in the
  133. esoteric teachings of every race may be traced back to Hermes. Even the
  134. most ancient teachings of India undoubtedly have their roots in the
  135. original Hermetic Teachings.
  136.
  137. From the land of the Ganges many advanced occultists wandered to the
  138. land of Egypt, and sat at the feet of the Master. From him they obtained
  139. the Master-Key which explained and reconciled their divergent views, and
  140. thus the Secret Doctrine was firmly established. From other lands also
  141. came the learned ones, all of whom regarded Hermes as the Master of
  142. Masters, and his influence was so great that in spite of the many
  143. wanderings from the path on the part of the centuries of teachers in
  144. these different lands, there may still be found a certain basic
  145. resemblance and correspondence which underlies the many and often quite
  146. divergent theories entertained and taught by the occultists of these
  147. different lands today. The student of Comparative Religions will be able
  148. to perceive the influence of the Hermetic Teachings in every religion
  149. worthy of the name, now known to man, whether it be a dead religion or
  150. one in full vigor in our own times. There is always certain
  151. correspondence in spite of the contradictory features, and the Hermetic
  152. Teachings act as the Great Reconciler.
  153.
  154. The lifework of Hermes seems to have been in the direction of planting
  155. the great Seed-Truth which has grown and blossomed in so many strange
  156. forms, rather than to establish a school of philosophy which would
  157. dominate, the world's thought. But, nevertheless, the original truths
  158. taught by him have been kept intact in their original purity by a few
  159. men each age, who, refusing great numbers of half-developed students and
  160. followers, followed the Hermetic custom and reserved their truth for the
  161. few who were ready to comprehend and master it. From lip to ear the
  162. truth has been handed down among the few. There have always been a few
  163. Initiates in each generation, in the various lands of the earth, who
  164. kept alive the sacred flame of the Hermetic Teachings, and such have
  165. always been willing to use their lamps to re-light the lesser lamps of
  166. the outside world, when the light of truth grew dim, and clouded by
  167. reason of neglect, and when the wicks became clogged with foreign
  168. matter. There were always a few to tend faithfully the altar of the
  169. Truth, upon which was kept alight the Perpetual Lamp of Wisdom. These
  170. men devoted their lives to the labor of love which the poet has so well
  171. stated in his lines:
  172.
  173.      "O, let not the flame die out! Cherished age after age
  174.      in its dark cavern--in its holy temples cherished. Fed
  175.      by pure ministers of love--let not the flame die out!"
  176.
  177. These men have never sought popular approval, nor numbers of followers.
  178. They are indifferent to these things, for they know how few there are in
  179. each generation who are ready for the truth, or who would recognize it
  180. if it were presented to them. They reserve the "strong meat for men,"
  181. while others furnish the "milk for babes." They reserve their pearls of
  182. wisdom for the few elect, who recognize their value and who wear them in
  183. their crowns, instead of casting them before the materialistic vulgar
  184. swine, who would trample them in the mud and mix them with their
  185. disgusting mental food. But still these men have never forgotten or
  186. overlooked the original teachings of Hermes, regarding the passing on of
  187. the words of truth to those ready to receive it, which teaching is
  188. stated in The Kybalion as follows: "Where fall the footsteps of the
  189. Master, the ears of those ready for his Teaching open wide." And again:
  190. "When the ears of the student are ready to hear, then cometh the lips to
  191. fill them with wisdom." But their customary attitude has always been
  192. strictly in accordance with the other Hermetic aphorism, also in The
  193. Kybalion: "The lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of
  194. Understanding."
  195.
  196. There are those who have criticized this attitude of the Hermetists, and
  197. who have claimed that they did not manifest the proper spirit in their
  198. policy of seclusion and reticence. But a moment's glance back over the
  199. pages of history will show the wisdom of the Masters, who knew the folly
  200. of attempting to teach to the world that which it was neither ready or
  201. willing to receive. The Hermetists have never sought to be martyrs, and
  202. have, instead, sat silently aside with a pitying smile on their closed
  203. lips, while the "heathen raged noisily about them" in their customary
  204. amusement of putting to death and torture the honest but misguided
  205. enthusiasts who imagined that they could force upon a race of barbarians
  206. the truth capable of being understood only by the elect who had advanced
  207. along The Path.
  208.
  209. And the spirit of persecution has not as yet died out in the land. There
  210. are certain Hermetic Teachings, which, if publicly promulgated, would
  211. bring down upon the teachers a great cry of scorn and revilement from
  212. the multitude, who would again raise the cry of "Crucify! Crucify."
  213.
  214. In this little work we have endeavored to give you an idea of the
  215. fundamental teachings of The Kybalion, striving to give you the working
  216. Principles, leaving you to apply therm yourselves, rather than
  217. attempting to work out the teaching in detail. If you are a true
  218. student, you will be able to work out and apply these Principles--if
  219. not, then you must develop yourself into one, for otherwise the Hermetic
  220. Teachings will be as "words, words, words" to you.

  225.
  226. CHAPTER I
  227.
  228. THE HERMETIC PHILOSOPHY
  229.
  230.     "The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears
  231.     of Understanding"--The Kybalion.
  232.
  233. From old Egypt have come the fundamental esoteric and occult teachings
  234. which have so strongly influenced the philosophies of all races, nations
  235. and peoples, for several thousand years. Egypt, the home of the Pyramids
  236. and the Sphinx, was the birthplace of the Hidden Wisdom and Mystic
  237. Teachings. From her Secret Doctrine all nations have borrowed. India,
  238. Persia, Chaldea, Medea, China, Japan, Assyria, ancient Greece and Rome,
  239. and other ancient countries partook liberally at the feast of knowledge
  240. which the Hierophants and Masters of the Land of Isis so freely provided
  241. for those who came prepared to partake of the great store of Mystic and
  242. Occult Lore which the masterminds of that ancient land had gathered
  243. together.
  244.
  245. In ancient Egypt dwelt the great Adepts and Masters who have never been
  246. surpassed, and who seldom have been equaled, during the centuries that
  247. have taken their processional flight since the days of the Great Hermes.
  248. In Egypt was located the Great Lodge of Lodges of the Mystics. At the
  249. doors of her Temples entered the Neophytes who afterward, as
  250. Hierophants, Adepts, and Masters, traveled to the four corners of the
  251. earth, carrying with them the precious knowledge which they were ready,
  252. anxious, and willing to pass on to those who were ready to receive the
  253. same. All students of the Occult recognize the debt that they owe to
  254. these venerable Masters of that ancient land.
  255.
  256. But among these great Masters of Ancient Egypt there once dwelt one of
  257. whom Masters hailed as "The Master of Masters." This man, if "man"
  258. indeed he was, dwelt in Egypt in the earliest days. He was known as
  259. Hermes Trismegistus. He was the father of the Occult Wisdom; the founder
  260. of Astrology; the discoverer of Alchemy. The details of his life story
  261. are lost to history, owing to the lapse of the years, though several of
  262. the ancient countries disputed with each other in their claims to the
  263. honor of having furnished his birthplace--and this thousands of years
  264. ago. The date of his sojourn in Egypt, in that his last incarnation on
  265. this planet, is not now known, but it has been fixed at the early days
  266. of the oldest dynasties of Egypt--long before the days of Moses. The
  267. best authorities regard him as a contemporary of Abraham, and some of
  268. the Jewish traditions go so far as to claim that Abraham acquired a
  269. portion of his mystic knowledge from Hermes himself.
  270.
  271. As the years rolled by after his passing from this plane of life
  272. (tradition recording that he lived three hundred years in the flesh),
  273. the Egyptians deified Hermes, and made him one of their gods, under the
  274. name of Thoth. Years after, the people of Ancient Greece also made him
  275. one of their many gods--calling him "Hermes, the god of Wisdom." The
  276. Egyptians revered his memory for many centuries-yes, tens of centuries--
  277. calling him "the Scribe of the Gods," and bestowing upon him,
  278. distinctively, his ancient title, "Trismegistus," which means "the
  279. thrice-great"; "the great-great"; "the greatest-great"; etc. In all the
  280. ancient lands, the name of Hermes Trismegistus was revered, the name
  281. being synonymous with the "Fount of Wisdom."
  282.
  283. Even to this day, we use the term "hermetic" in the sense of "secret";
  284. "sealed so that nothing can escape"; etc., and this by reason of the
  285. fact that the followers of Hermes always observed the principle of
  286. secrecy in their teachings. They did not believe in "casting pearls
  287. before swine," but rather held to the teaching "milk for babes"; "meat
  288. for strong men," both of which maxims are familiar to readers of the
  289. Christian scriptures, but both of which had been used by the Egyptians
  290. for centuries before the Christian era.
  291.
  292. And this policy of careful dissemination of the truth has always
  293. characterized the Hermetics, even unto the present day. The Hermetic
  294. Teachings are to be found in all lands, among all religions, but never
  295. identified with any particular country, nor with any particular
  296. religious sect. This because of the warning of the ancient teachers
  297. against allowing the Secret Doctrine to become crystallized into a
  298. creed. The wisdom of this caution is apparent to all students of
  299. history. The ancient occultism of India and Persia degenerated, and was
  300. largely lost, owing to the fact that the teachers became priests, and so
  301. mixed theology with the philosophy, the result being that the occultism
  302. of India and Persia has been gradually lost amidst the mass of religious
  303. superstition, cults, creeds and "gods." So it was with Ancient Greece
  304. and Rome. So it was with the Hermetic Teachings of the Gnostics and
  305. Early Christians, which were lost at the time of Constantine, whose iron
  306. hand smothered philosophy with the blanket of theology, losing to the
  307. Christian Church that which was its very essence and spirit, and causing
  308. it to grope throughout several centuries before it found the way back to
  309. its ancient faith, the indications apparent to all careful observers in
  310. this Twentieth Century being that the Church is now struggling to get
  311. back to its ancient mystic teachings.
  312.
  313. But there were always a few faithful souls who kept alive the Flame,
  314. tending it carefully, and not allowing its light to become extinguished.
  315. And thanks to these staunch hearts, and fearless minds, we have the
  316. truth still with us.  But it is not found in books, to any great extent.
  317. It has been passed along from Master to Student; from Initiate to
  318. Hierophant; from lip to ear. When it was written down at all, its
  319. meaning was veiled in terms of alchemy and astrology so that only those
  320. possessing the key could read it aright. This was made necessary in
  321. order to avoid the persecutions of the theologians of the Middle Ages,
  322. who fought the Secret Doctrine with fire and sword; stake, gibbet and
  323. cross. Even to this day there will be found but few reliable books on
  324. the Hermetic Philosophy, although there are countless references to it
  325. in many books written on various phases of Occultism. And yet, the
  326. Hermetic Philosophy is the only Master Key which will open all the doors
  327. of the Occult Teachings!
  328.
  329. In the early days, there was a compilation of certain Basic Hermetic
  330. Doctrines, passed on from teacher to student, which was known as "THE
  331. KYBALION," the exact significance and meaning of the term having been
  332. lost for several centuries. This teaching, however, is known to many to
  333. whom it has descended, from mouth to ear, on and on throughout the
  334. centuries. Its precepts have never been written down, or printed, so far
  335. as we know. It was merely a collection of maxims, axioms, and precepts,
  336. which were non-understandable to outsiders, but which were readily
  337. understood by students, after the axioms, maxims, and precepts had been
  338. explained and exemplified by the Hermetic Initiates to their Neophytes.
  339. These teachings really constituted the basic principles of "The Art of
  340. Hermetic Alchemy," which, contrary to the general belief, dealt in the
  341. mastery of Mental Forces, rather than Material Elements-the
  342. Transmutation of one kind of Mental Vibrations into others, instead of
  343. the changing of one kind of metal into another. The legends of the
  344. "Philosopher's Stone" which would turn base metal into Gold, was an
  345. allegory relating to Hermetic Philosophy, readily understood by all
  346. students of true Hermeticism.
  347.
  348. In this little book, of which this is the First Lesson, we invite our
  349. students to examine into the Hermetic Teachings, as set forth in THE
  350. KYBALION, and as explained by ourselves, humble students of the
  351. Teachings, who, while bearing the title of Initiates, are still students
  352. at the feet of HERMES, the Master. We herein give you many of the
  353. maxims, axioms and precepts of THE KYBALION, accompanied by explanations
  354. and illustrations which we deem likely to render the teachings more
  355. easily comprehended by the modern student, particularly as the original
  356. text is purposely veiled in obscure terms.
  357.
  358. The original maxims, axioms, and precepts of THE KYBALION are printed
  359. herein, in italics, the proper credit being given. Our own work is
  360. printed in the regular way, in the body of the work. We trust that the
  361. many students to whom we now offer this little work will derive as much
  362. benefit from the study of its pages as have the many who have gone on
  363. before, treading the same Path to Mastery throughout the centuries that
  364. have passed since the times of HERMES TRISMEGISTUS--the Master of
  365. Masters--the Great-Great. In the words of "THE KYBALION":
  366.
  367.     "Where fall the footsteps of the Master, the ears of those
  368.     ready for his Teaching open wide."--The Kybalion.
  369.
  370.     "When the ears of the student are ready to hear, then cometh
  371.     the lips to fill them with Wisdom."--The Kybalion.
  372.
  373. So that according to the Teachings, the passage of this book to those
  374. ready for the instruction will attract the attention of such as are
  375. prepared to receive the Teaching. And, likewise, when the pupil is ready
  376. to receive the truth, then will this little book come to him, or her.
  377. Such is The Law. The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect, in its
  378. aspect of The Law of Attraction, will bring lips and ear together--pupil
  379. and book in company. So mote it be!
  380.
  381.
  382.
  383. CHAPTER II
  384.
  385. THE SEVEN HERMETIC PRINCIPLES
  386.
  387.     "The Principles of Truth are Seven; he who knows these,
  388.     understandingly, possesses the Magic Key before whose
  389.     touch all the Doors of the Temple fly open."--The Kybalion.
  390.
  391. The Seven Hermetic Principles, upon which the entire Hermetic Philosophy
  392. is based, are as follows:
  393.
  394.     1. The Principle of Mentalism.
  395.     2. The Principle of Correspondence.
  396.     3. The Principle of Vibration.
  397.     4. The Principle of Polarity.
  398.     5. The Principle of Rhythm.
  399.     6. The Principle of Cause and Effect.
  400.     7. The Principle of Gender.
  401.
  402. These Seven Principles will be discussed and explained as we proceed
  403. with these lessons. A short explanation of each, however, may as well be
  404. given at this point.
  405.
  406. 1.  The Principle of Mentalism
  407.
  408.     "THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."--The Kybalion.
  409.
  410. This Principle embodies the truth that "All is Mind." It explains that
  411. THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward
  412. manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of "The
  413. Material Universe"; the "Phenomena of Life"; "Matter"; "Energy"; and, in
  414. short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT which in
  415. itself is UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and
  416. thought of as AN UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND. It also explains that
  417. all the phenomenal world or universe is simply a Mental Creation of THE
  418. ALL, subject to the Laws of Created Things, and that the universe, as a
  419. whole, and in its parts or units, has its existence in the Mind of THE
  420. ALL, in which Mind we "live and move and have our being." This
  421. Principle, by establishing the Mental Nature of the Universe, easily
  422. explains all of the varied mental and psychic phenomena that occupy such
  423. a large portion of the public attention, and which, without such
  424. explanation, are non-understandable and defy scientific treatment. An
  425. understanding of this great Hermetic Principle of Mentalism enables the
  426. individual to readily grasp the laws of the Mental Universe, and to
  427. apply the same to his well-being and advancement. The Hermetic Student
  428. is enabled to apply intelligently the great Mental Laws, instead of
  429. using them in a haphazard manner. With the Master-Key in his possession,
  430. the student may unlock the many doors of the mental and psychic temple
  431. of knowledge, and enter the same freely and intelligently. This
  432. Principle explains the true nature of "Energy," "Power," and "Matter,"
  433. and why and how all these are subordinate to the Mastery of Mind. One of
  434. the old Hermetic Masters wrote, long ages ago: "He who grasps the truth
  435. of the Mental Nature of the Universe is well advanced on The Path to
  436. Mastery." And these words are as true today as at the time they were
  437. first written. Without this Master-Key, Mastery is impossible, and the
  438. student knocks in vain at the many doors of The Temple.
  439.
  440. 2.  The Principle of Correspondence
  441.
  442.     "As above, so below; as below, so above."--The Kybalion.
  443.
  444. This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence
  445. between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life.
  446. The old Hermetic axiom ran in these words: "As above, so below; as
  447. below, so above." And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means
  448. of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. There are
  449. planes beyond our knowing, but when we apply the Principle of
  450. Correspondence to them we are able to understand much that would
  451. otherwise be unknowable to us. This Principle is of universal
  452. application and manifestation, on the various planes of the material,
  453. mental, and spiritual universe--it is an Universal Law. The ancient
  454. Hermetists considered this Principle as one of the most important mental
  455. instruments by which man was able to pry aside the obstacles which hid
  456. from view the Unknown. Its use even tore aside the Veil of Isis to the
  457. extent that a glimpse of the face of the goddess might be caught. Just
  458. as a knowledge of the Principles of Geometry enables man to measure
  459. distant suns and their movements, while seated in his observatory,
  460. so a knowledge of the Principle of Correspondence enables Man to reason
  461. intelligently from the Known to the Unknown.  Studying the monad, he
  462. understands the archangel.
  463.
  464. 3.  The Principle of Vibration
  465.
  466.     "Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."--The
  467.     Kybalion.
  468.
  469. This Principle embodies the truth that "everything is in motion";
  470. "everything vibrates"; "nothing is at rest"; facts which Modern Science
  471. endorses, and which each new scientific discovery tends to verify.  And
  472. yet this Hermetic Principle was enunciated thousands of years ago, by
  473. the Masters of Ancient Egypt. This Principle explains that the
  474. differences between different manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind,
  475. and even Spirit, result largely from varying rates of Vibration. From
  476. THE ALL, which is Pure Spirit, down to the grossest form of Matter, all
  477. is in vibration--the higher the vibration, the higher the position in
  478. the scale. The vibration of Spirit is at such an infinite rate of
  479. intensity and rapidity that it is practically at rest--just as a rapidly
  480. moving wheel seems to be motionless. And at the other end of the scale,
  481. there are gross forms of matter whose vibrations are so low as to seem
  482. at rest. Between these poles, there are millions upon millions of
  483. varying degrees of vibration. From corpuscle and electron, atom and
  484. molecule, to worlds and universes, everything is in vibratory motion.
  485. This is also true on the planes of energy and force (which are but
  486. varying degrees of vibration); and also on the mental planes (whose
  487. states depend upon vibrations); and even on to the spiritual planes.
  488. An understanding of this Principle, with the appropriate formulas,
  489. enables Hermetic students to control their own mental vibrations as well
  490. as those of others. The Masters also apply this Principle to the
  491. conquering of Natural phenomena, in various ways. "He who understands
  492. the Principle of Vibration, has grasped the scepter of power," says one
  493. of the old writers.
  494.
  495. 4.  The Principle of Polarity
  496.
  497.     "Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its
  498.     pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are
  499.     identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet;
  500.     all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be
  501.     reconciled."--The Kybalion.
  502.
  503. This Principle embodies the truth that "everything is dual"; "everything
  504. has two poles"; "everything has its pair of opposites," all of which
  505. were old Hermetic axioms. It explains the old paradoxes, that have
  506. perplexed so many, which have been stated as follows: "Thesis and
  507. antithesis are identical in nature, but different in degree"; "opposites
  508. are the same, differing only in degree"; "the pairs of opposites may be
  509. reconciled"; "extremes meet"; "everything is and isn't, at the same
  510. time"; "all truths are but half-truths"; "every truth is half-false";
  511. "there are two sides to everything," etc., etc., etc. It explains that
  512. in everything there are two poles, or opposite aspects, and that
  513. "opposites" are really only the two extremes of the same thing, with
  514. many varying degrees between them. To illustrate:  Heat and Cold,
  515. although "opposites," are really the same thing, the differences
  516. consisting merely of degrees of the same thing. Look at your thermometer
  517. and see if you can discover where "heat" terminates and "cold" begins!
  518. There is no such thing as "absolute heat" or "absolute cold"--the two
  519. terms "heat" and "cold" simply indicate varying degrees of the same
  520. thing, and that "same thing" which manifests as "heat" and "cold"
  521. is merely a form, variety, and rate of Vibration. So "heat" and "cold"
  522. are simply the "two poles" of that which we call "Heat"--and the
  523. phenomena attendant thereupon are manifestations of the Principle of
  524. Polarity. The same Principle manifests in the case of "Light and
  525. Darkness," which are the same thing, the difference consisting of
  526. varying degrees between the two poles of the phenomena. Where does
  527. "darkness" leave off, and "light" begin? What is the difference between
  528. "Large and Small"? Between "Hard and Soft"? Between "Black and White"?
  529. Between "Sharp and Dull"? Between "Noise and Quiet"? Between "High and
  530. Low"? Between "Positive and Negative"? The Principle of Polarity
  531. explains these paradoxes, and no other Principle can supersede it. The
  532. same Principle operates on the Mental Plane. Let us take a radical and
  533. extreme example--that of "Love and Hate," two mental states apparently
  534. totally different.  And yet there are degrees of Hate and degrees of
  535. Love, and a middle point in which we use the terms "Like or Dislike,"
  536. which shade into each other so gradually that sometimes we are at a loss
  537. to know whether we "like" or "dislike" or "neither." And all are simply
  538. degrees of the same thing, as you will see if you will but think a
  539. moment.  And, more than this (and considered of more importance
  540. by the Hermetists), it is possible to change the vibrations of Hate to
  541. the vibrations of Love, in one's own mind, and in the minds of others.
  542. Many of you, who read these lines, have had personal experiences of the
  543. involuntary rapid transition from Love to Hate, and the reverse, in your
  544. own case and that of others.  And you will therefore realize the
  545. possibility of this being accomplished by the use of the Will, by means
  546. of the Hermetic formulas. "Good and Evil" are but the poles of the same
  547. thing, and the Hermetist understands the art of transmuting Evil into
  548. Good, by means of an application of the Principle of Polarity. In short,
  549. the "Art of Polarization" becomes a phase of "Mental Alchemy" known and
  550. practiced by the ancient and modern Hermetic Masters.  An understanding
  551. of the Principle will enable one to change his own Polarity, as well as
  552. that of others, if he will devote the time and study necessary to master
  553. the art.
  554.
  555. 5.  The Principle of Rhythm
  556.
  557.     "Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides;
  558.     all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in
  559.     everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the
  560.     measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates."--The
  561.     Kybalion.
  562.
  563. This Principle embodies the truth that in everything there is manifested
  564. a measured motion, to and fro; a flow and inflow; a swing backward and
  565. forward; a pendulum-like movement; a tide-like ebb and flow; a high-tide
  566. and low-tide; between the two poles which exist in accordance with the
  567. Principle of Polarity described a moment ago. There is always an action
  568. and a reaction; an advance and a retreat; a rising and a sinking. This
  569. is in the affairs of the Universe, suns, worlds, men, animals, mind,
  570. energy, and matter.  This law is manifest in the creation and
  571. destruction of worlds; in the rise and fall of nations; in the life of
  572. all things; and finally in the mental states of Man (and it is with this
  573. latter that the Hermetists find the understanding of the Principle most
  574. important). The Hermetists have grasped this Principle, finding its
  575. universal application, and have also discovered certain means to
  576. overcome its effects in themselves by the use of the appropriate
  577. formulas and methods. They apply the Mental Law of Neutralization. They
  578. cannot annul the Principle, or cause it to cease its operation, but they
  579. have learned how to escape its effects upon themselves to a certain
  580. degree depending upon the Mastery of the Principle.  They have learned
  581. how to USE it, instead of being USED BY it. In this and similar
  582. methods, consist the Art of the Hermetists. The Master of Hermetics
  583. polarizes himself at the point at which he desires to rest, and then
  584. neutralizes the Rhythmic swing of the pendulum which would tend to carry
  585. him to the other pole.  All individuals who have attained any degree of
  586. Self-Mastery do this to a certain degree, more or less unconsciously,
  587. but the Master does this consciously, and by the use of his Will, and
  588. attains a degree of Poise and Mental Firmness almost impossible of
  589. belief on the part of the masses who are swung backward and forward like
  590. a pendulum. This Principle and that of Polarity have been closely
  591. studied by the Hermetists, and the methods of counteracting,
  592. neutralizing, and USING them form an important part of the Hermetic
  593. Mental Alchemy.
  594.
  595. 6.  The Principle of Cause and Effect
  596.
  597.     "Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause;
  598.     everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name
  599.     for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation,
  600.     but nothing escapes the Law."--The Kybalion.
  601.
  602. This Principle embodies the fact that there is a Cause for every Effect;
  603. an Effect from every Cause. It explains that:  "Everything Happens
  604. according to Law"; that nothing ever "merely happens"; that there is no
  605. such thing as Chance; that while there are various planes of Cause and
  606. Effect, the higher dominating the lower planes, still nothing ever
  607. entirely escapes the Law. The Hermetists understand the art and methods
  608. of rising above the ordinary plane of Cause and Effect, to a certain
  609. degree, and by mentally rising to a higher plane they become Causers
  610. instead of Effects. The masses of people are carried along, obedient to
  611. environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than themselves;
  612. heredity; suggestion; and other outward causes moving them about like
  613. pawns on the Chessboard of Life. But the Masters, rising to the plane
  614. above, dominate their moods, characters, qualities, and powers, as well
  615. as the environment surrounding them, and become Movers instead of pawns.
  616. They help to PLAY THE GAME OF LIFE, instead of being played and moved
  617. about by other wills and environment. They USE the Principle instead of
  618. being its tools. The Masters obey the Causation of the higher planes,
  619. but they help to RULE on their own plane. In this statement there is
  620. condensed a wealth of Hermetic knowledge--let him read who can.
  621.
  622. 7.  The Principle of Gender
  623.
  624.     "Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine
  625.     and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all
  626.     planes."--The Kybalion.
  627.
  628. This Principle embodies the truth that there is GENDER manifested in
  629. everything--the Masculine and Feminine Principles ever at work. This is
  630. true not only of the Physical Plane, but of the Mental and even the
  631. Spiritual Planes. On the Physical Plane, the Principle manifests as SEX,
  632. on the higher planes it takes higher forms, but the Principle is ever
  633. the same.  No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible
  634. without this Principle. An understanding of its laws will throw light on
  635. many a subject that has perplexed the minds of men. The Principle of
  636. Gender works ever in the direction of generation, regeneration, and
  637. creation. Everything, and every person, contains the two Elements or
  638. Principles, or this great Principle, within it, him or her. Every Male
  639. thing has the Female Element also; every Female contains also the Male
  640. Principle.  If you would understand the philosophy of Mental and
  641. Spiritual Creation, Generation, and Re-generation, you must understand
  642. and study this Hermetic Principle. It contains the solution of many
  643. mysteries of Life. We caution you that this Principle has no reference
  644. to the many base, pernicious and degrading lustful theories, teachings
  645. and practices, which are taught under fanciful titles, and which are a
  646. prostitution of the great natural principle of Gender. Such base
  647. revivals of the ancient infamous forms of Phallicism tend to ruin mind,
  648. body and soul, and the Hermetic Philosophy has ever sounded the warning
  649. note against these degraded teachings which tend toward lust,
  650. licentiousness, and perversion of Nature's principles. If you seek such
  651. teachings, you must go elsewhere for them--Hermeticism contains nothing
  652. for you along these lines. To the pure, all things are pure; to the
  653. base, all things are base.
  654.
  655.
  656.
  657. CHAPTER III
  658.
  659. MENTAL TRANSMUTATION
  660.
  661.     "Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted,
  662.     from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition;
  663.     pole to pole; vibration to vibration. True Hermetic Transmutation
  664.     is a Mental Art."--The Kybalion.
  665.
  666. As we have stated, the Hermetists were the original alchemists,
  667. astrologers, and psychologists, Hermes having been the founder of these
  668. schools of thought. From astrology has grown modern astronomy; from
  669. alchemy has grown modern chemistry; from the mystic psychology has grown
  670. the modern psychology of the schools. But it must not be supposed that
  671. the ancients were ignorant of that which the modern schools suppose to
  672. be their exclusive and special property. The records engraved on the
  673. stones of Ancient Egypt show conclusively that the ancients had a full
  674. comprehensive knowledge of astronomy, the very building of the Pyramids
  675. showing the connection between their design and the study of
  676. astronomical science. Nor were they ignorant of Chemistry, for the
  677. fragments of the ancient writings show that they were acquainted with
  678. the chemical properties of things; in fact, the ancient theories
  679. regarding physics are being slowly verified by the latest discoveries of
  680. modern science, notably those relating to the constitution of matter.
  681. Nor must it be supposed that they were ignorant of the so-called modern
  682. discoveries in psychology--on the contrary, the Egyptians were
  683. especially skilled in the science of Psychology, particularly in the
  684. branches that the modern schools ignore, but which, nevertheless, are
  685. being uncovered under the name of "psychic science" which is perplexing
  686. the psychologists of to-day, and making them reluctantly admit that
  687. "there may be something in it after all."
  688.
  689. The truth is, that beneath the material chemistry, astronomy and
  690. psychology (that is, the psychology in its phase of "brain-action") the
  691. ancients possessed a knowledge of transcendental astronomy, called
  692. astrology; of transcendental chemistry, called alchemy; of
  693. transcendental psychology, called mystic psychology. They possessed the
  694. Inner Knowledge as well as the Outer Knowledge, the latter alone being
  695. possessed by modern scientists. Among the many secret branches of
  696. knowledge possessed by the Hermetists, was that known as Mental
  697. Transmutation, which forms the subject matter of this lesson.
  698.
  699. "Transmutation" is a term usually employed to designate the ancient art
  700. of the transmutation of metals--particularly of the base metals into
  701. gold. The word "Transmute" means "to change from one nature, form, or
  702. substance, into another; to transform" (Webster). And accordingly,
  703. "Mental Transmutation" means the art of changing and transforming mental
  704. states, forms, and conditions, into others. So you may see that Mental
  705. Transmutation is the "Art of Mental Chemistry," if you like the term--a
  706. form of practical Mystic Psychology.
  707.
  708. But this means far more than appears on the surface. Transmutation,
  709. Alchemy, or Chemistry on the Mental Plane is important enough in its
  710. effects, to be sure, and if the art stopped there it would still be one
  711. of the most important branches of study known to man. But this is only
  712. the beginning. Let us see why!
  713.
  714. The first of the Seven Hermetic Principles is the Principle of
  715. Mentalism, the axiom of which is "THE ALL is Mind; the Universe is
  716. Mental," which means that the Underlying Reality of the Universe is
  717. Mind; and the Universe itself is Mental--that is, "existing in the Mind
  718. of THE ALL." We shall consider this Principle in succeeding lessons, but
  719. let us see the effect of the principle if it be assumed to be true.
  720.
  721. If the Universe is Mental in its nature, then Mental Transmutation must
  722. be the art of CHANGING THE CONDITIONS OF THE UNIVERSE, along the lines
  723. of Matter, Force and mind. So you see, therefore, that Mental
  724. Transmutation is really the "Magic" of which the ancient; writers had so
  725. much to say in their mystical works, and about which they gave so few
  726. practical instructions. If All be Mental, then the art which enables one
  727. to transmute mental conditions must render the Master the controller of
  728. material conditions as well as those ordinarily called "mental."
  729.
  730. As a matter of fact, none but advanced Mental Alchemists have been able
  731. to attain the degree of power necessary to control the grosser physical
  732. conditions, such as the control of the elements of Nature; the
  733. production or cessation of tempests; the production and cessation of
  734. earthquakes and other great physical phenomena. But that such men have
  735. existed, and do exist today, is a matter of earnest belief to all
  736. advanced occultists of all schools. That the Masters exist, and have
  737. these powers, the best teachers assure their students, having had
  738. experiences which justify them in such belief and statements. These
  739. Masters do not make public exhibitions of their powers, but seek
  740. seclusion from the crowds of men, in order to better work their may
  741. along the Path of Attainment. We mention their existence, at this point,
  742. merely to call your attention to the fact that their power is entirely
  743. Mental, and operates along the lines of the higher Mental Transmutation,
  744. under the Hermetic Principle of Mentalism.
  745.
  746.     "The Universe is Mental"--The Kybalion.
  747.
  748. But students and Hermetists of lesser degree than Masters--the Initiates
  749. and Teachers--are able to freely work along the Mental Plane, in Mental
  750. Transmutation. In fact all that we call "psychic phenomena,"; "mental
  751. influence"; "mental science"; "new-thought phenomena," etc., operates
  752. along the same general lines, for there is but one principle involved,
  753. no matter by what name the phenomena be called.
  754.
  755. The student and practitioner of Mental Transmutation works among the
  756. Mental Plane, transmuting mental conditions, states, etc., into others,
  757. according to various formulas, more or less efficacious. The various
  758. "treatments," "affirmations," "denials" etc., of the schools of mental
  759. science are but formulas, often quite imperfect and unscientific, of The
  760. Hermetic Art. The majority of modern practitioners are quite ignorant
  761. compared to the ancient masters, for they lack the fundamental knowledge
  762. upon which the work is based.
  763.
  764. Not only may the mental states, etc., of one's self be changed or
  765. transmuted by Hermetic Methods; but also the states of others may be,
  766. and are, constantly transmuted in the same way, usually unconsciously,
  767. but often consciously by some understanding the laws and principles, in
  768. cases where the people affected are not informed of the principles of
  769. self-protection. And more than this, as many students and practitioners
  770. of modern mental science know, every material condition depending upon
  771. the minds of other people may be changed or transmuted in accordance
  772. with the earnest desire, will, and "treatments" of person desiring
  773. changed conditions of life. The public are so generally informed
  774. regarding these things at present, that we do not deem it necessary to
  775. mention the same at length, our purpose at this point being merely to
  776. show the Hermetic Principle and Art underlying all of these various
  777. forms of practice, good and evil, for the force can be used in opposite
  778. directions according to the Hermetic Principles of Polarity.
  779.
  780. In this little book we shall state the basic principles of Mental
  781. Transmutation, that all who read may grasp the Underlying Principles,
  782. and thus possess the Master-Key that will unlock the many doors of the
  783. Principle of Polarity.
  784.
  785. We shall now proceed to a consideration of the first of the Hermetic
  786. Seven Principles--the Principle of Mentalism, in which is explained the
  787. truth that "THE ALL is Mind; the Universe is Mental," in the words of
  788. The Kybalion. We ask the close attention, and careful study of this
  789. great Principle, on the part of our students, for it is really the Basic
  790. Principle of the whole Hermetic Philosophy, and of the Hermetic Art of
  791. Mental Transmutation.
  792.
  793.
  794.
  795. CHAPTER IV
  796.
  797. THE ALL
  798.
  799.     "Under, and back of, the Universe of Time, Space and Change,
  800.     is ever to be found The Substantial Reality--the Fundamental
  801.     Truth."--The Kybalion.
  802.
  803. "Substance" means: "that which underlies all outward manifestations; the
  804. essence; the essential reality; the thing in itself," etc. "Substantial"
  805. means: "actually existing; being the essential element; being real," etc.
  806. "Reality" means: "the state of being real; true, enduring; valid; fixed;
  807. permanent; actual," etc.
  808.
  809. Under and behind all outward appearances or manifestations, there must
  810. always be a Substantial Reality. This is the Law. Man considering the
  811. Universe, of which he is a unit, sees nothing but change in matter,
  812. forces, and mental states. He sees that nothing really IS, but that
  813. everything is BECOMING and CHANGING. Nothing stands still-everything is
  814. being born, growing, dying-the very instant a thing reaches its height,
  815. it begins to decline--the law of rhythm is in constant operation--there
  816. is no reality, enduring quality, fixity, or substantiality in anything--
  817. nothing is permanent but Change. He sees all things evolving from other
  818. things, and resolving into other things--constant action and reaction;
  819. inflow and outflow; building up and tearing down; creation and
  820. destruction; birth, growth and death. Nothing endures but Change. And if
  821. he be a thinking man, he realizes that all of these changing things must
  822. be but outward appearances or manifestations of some Underlying
  823. Power--some Substantial Reality.
  824.
  825. All thinkers, in all lands and in all times, have assumed the necessity
  826. for postulating the existence of this Substantial Reality. All
  827. philosophies worthy of the name have been based upon this thought. Men
  828. have given to this Substantial Reality many names-some have called it by
  829. the term of Deity (under many titles). Others have called it "The
  830. Infinite and Eternal Energy" others have tried to call it "Matter"--but
  831. all have acknowledged its existence. It is self-evident it needs no
  832. argument.
  833.
  834. In these lessons we have followed the example of some of the world's
  835. greatest thinkers, both ancient and modern--the Hermetic. Masters--and
  836. have called this Underlying Power--this Substantial Reality--by the
  837. Hermetic name of "THE ALL," which term we consider the most
  838. comprehensive of the many terms applied by Man to THAT which transcends
  839. names and terms.
  840.
  841. We accept and teach the view of the great Hermetic thinkers of all
  842. times, as well as of those illumined souls who have reached higher
  843. planes of being, both of whom assert that the inner nature of THE ALL is
  844. UNKNOWABLE. This must be so, for naught by THE ALL itself can comprehend
  845. its own nature and being.
  846.
  847. The Hermetists believe and teach that THE ALL, "in itself," is and must
  848. ever be UNKNOWABLE. They regard all the theories, guesses and
  849. speculations of the theologians and metaphysicians regarding the inner
  850. nature of THE ALL, as but the childish efforts of mortal minds to grasp
  851. the secret of the Infinite. Such efforts have always failed and will
  852. always fail, from the very nature of the task. One pursuing such
  853. inquiries travels around and around in the labyrinth of thought, until
  854. he is lost to all sane reasoning, action or conduct, and is utterly
  855. unfitted for the work of life. He is like the squirrel which frantically
  856. runs around and around the circling treadmill wheel of his cage,
  857. traveling ever and yet reaching nowhere--at the end a prisoner still,
  858. and standing just where he started.
  859.
  860. And still more presumptuous are those who attempt to ascribe to THE ALL
  861. the personality, qualities, properties, characteristics and attributes
  862. of themselves, ascribing to THE ALL the human emotions, feelings, and
  863. characteristics, even down to the pettiest qualities of mankind, such as
  864. jealousy, susceptibility to flattery and praise, desire for offerings
  865. and worship, and all the other survivals from the days of the childhood
  866. of the race. Such ideas are not worthy of grown men and women, and are
  867. rapidly being discarded.
  868.
  869. (At this point, it may be proper for me to state that we make a
  870. distinction between Religion and Theology--between Philosophy and
  871. Metaphysics. Religion, to us, means that intuitional realization of the
  872. existence of THE ALL, and one's relationship to it; while Theology means
  873. the attempts of men to ascribe personality, qualities, and
  874. characteristics to it; their theories regarding its affairs, will,
  875. desires, plans, and designs, and their assumption of the office of ''
  876. middle-men'' between THE ALL and the people. Philosophy, to us, means
  877. the inquiry after knowledge of things knowable and thinkable; while
  878. Metaphysics means the attempt to carry the inquiry over and beyond the
  879. boundaries and into regions unknowable and unthinkable, and with the
  880. same tendency as that of Theology. And consequently, both Religion and
  881. Philosophy mean to us things having roots in Reality, while Theology and
  882. Metaphysics seem like broken reeds, rooted in the quicksands of
  883. ignorance, and affording naught but the most insecure support for the
  884. mind or soul of Man. we do not insist upon our students accepting these
  885. definitions--we mention them merely to show our position.
  886. At any rate, you shall hear very little about Theology and Metaphysics
  887. in these lessons.)
  888.
  889. But while the essential nature of THE ALL is Unknowable, there are
  890. certain truths connected with its existence which the human mind finds
  891. itself compelled to accept. And an examination of these reports form a
  892. proper subject of inquiry, particularly as they agree with the reports
  893. of the Illumined on higher planes. And to this inquiry we now invite
  894. you.
  895.
  896.     "THAT which is the Fundamental Truth--the Substantial
  897.     Reality--is beyond true naming, but the Wise Men call
  898.     it THE ALL."--The Kybalion.
  899.
  900.     "In its Essence, THE ALL is UNKNOWABLE."--The Kybalion.
  901.
  902.     "But, the report of Reason must be hospitably received,
  903.     and treated with respect."--The Kybalion.
  904.
  905. The human reason, whose reports we must accept so long as we think at
  906. all, informs us as follows regarding THE ALL, and that without
  907. attempting to remove the veil of the Unknowable:
  908.
  909.     (1) THE ALL must be ALL that REALLY IS. There can be
  910.     nothing existing outside of THE ALL, else THE ALL would
  911.     not be THE ALL.
  912.
  913.     (2) THE ALL must be INFINITE, for there is nothing else
  914.     to define, confine, bound, limit; or restrict THE ALL.
  915.     It must be Infinite in Time, or ETERNAL,--it must have
  916.     always continuously existed, for there is nothing else to
  917.     have ever created it, and something can never evolve from
  918.     nothing, and if it had ever "not been," even for a moment,
  919.     it would not "be" now,--it must continuously exist forever,
  920.     for there is nothing to destroy it, and it can never
  921.     "not-be," even for a moment, because something can never
  922.     become nothing. It must be Infinite in Space--it must be
  923.     Everywhere, for there is no place outside of THE ALL--it
  924.     cannot be otherwise than continuous in Space, without break,
  925.     cessation, separation, or interruption, for there is nothing
  926.     to break, separate, or interrupt its continuity, and nothing
  927.     with which to "fill in the gaps." It must be Infinite in
  928.     Power, or Absolute, for there is nothing to limit, restrict,
  929.     restrain, confine, disturb or condition it--it is subject to
  930.     no other Power, for there is no other Power.
  931.
  932.     (3) THE ALL must be IMMUTABLE, or not subject to change in
  933.     its real nature, for there is nothing to work changes upon it
  934.     nothing into which it could change, nor from which it could
  935.     have changed. It cannot be added to nor subtracted from;
  936.     increased nor diminished; nor become greater or lesser in any
  937.     respect whatsoever. It must have always been, and must always
  938.     remain, just what it is now--THE ALL--there has never been,
  939.     is not now, and never will be, anything else into which it
  940.     can change.
  941.
  942. THE ALL being Infinite, Absolute, Eternal and Unchangeable it must
  943. follow that anything finite, changeable, fleeting, and conditioned
  944. cannot be THE ALL. And as there is Nothing outside of THE ALL, in
  945. Reality, then any and all such finite things must be as Nothing in
  946. Reality. Now do not become befogged, nor frightened--we are not trying
  947. to lead you into the Christian Science field under cover of Hermetic
  948. Philosophy. There is a Reconciliation of this apparently contradictory
  949. state of affairs. Be patient, we will reach it in time.
  950.
  951. We see around us that which is called "Matter," which forms the physical
  952. foundation for all forms. Is THE ALL merely Matter? Not at all! Matter
  953. cannot manifest Life or Mind, and as Life and Mind are manifested in the
  954. Universe, THE ALL cannot be Matter, for nothing rises higher than its
  955. own source--nothing is ever manifested in an effect that is not in the
  956. cause--nothing is evolved as a consequent that is not involved as an
  957. antecedent. And then Modern Science informs us that there is really no
  958. such thing as Matter--that what we call Matter is merely "interrupted
  959. energy or force," that is, energy or force at a low rate of vibration.
  960. As a recent writer has said "Matter has melted into Mystery." Even
  961. Material Science has abandoned the theory of Matter, and now rests on
  962. the basis of "Energy."
  963.
  964. Then is THE ALL mere Energy or Force? Not Energy or Force as the
  965. materialists use the terms, for their energy and force are blind,
  966. mechanical things, devoid of Life or Mind. Life and Mind can never
  967. evolve from blind Energy or Force, for the reason given a moment ago:
  968. "Nothing can rise higher than its source--nothing is evolved unless it
  969. is involved--nothing manifests in the effect, unless it is in the cause.
  970. " And so THE ALL cannot be mere Energy or Force, for, if it were, then
  971. there would be no such things as Life and Mind in existence, and we know
  972. better than that, for we are Alive and using Mind to consider this very
  973. question, and so are those who claim that Energy or Force is Everything.
  974.
  975. What is there then higher than Matter or Energy that we know to be
  976. existent in the Universe? LIFE AND MIND! Life and Mind in all their
  977. varying degrees of unfoldment! "Then," you ask, "do you mean to tell us
  978. that THE ALL is LIFE and MIND?" Yes! and No! is our answer. If you mean
  979. Life and Mind as we poor petty mortals know them, we say No! THE ALL is
  980. not that! "But what kind of Life and Mind do you mean?" you ask.
  981.
  982. The answer is "LIVING MIND," as far above that which mortals know by
  983. those words, as Life and Mind are higher than mechanical forces, or
  984. matter--INFINITE LIVING MIND as compared to finite "Life and Mind." We
  985. mean that which the illumined souls mean when they reverently pronounce
  986. the word: "SPIRIT!"
  987.
  988. "THE ALL" is Infinite Living Mind--the Illumined call it SPIRIT!
  989.
  990.
  991.
  992. CHAPTER V
  993.
  994. THE MENTAL UNIVERSE
  995.
  996.     "The Universe is Mental--held in the Mind of THE
  997.     ALL."--The Kybalion.
  998.
  999. THE ALL is SPIRIT! But what is Spirit? This question cannot be answered,
1000. for the reason that its definition is practically that of THE ALL, which
1001. cannot be explained or defined. Spirit is simply a name that men give to
1002. the highest conception of Infinite Living Mind--it means "the Real
1003. Essence"--it means Living Mind, as much superior to Life and Mind as we
1004. know them, as the latter are superior to mechanical Energy and Matter.
1005. Spirit transcends our understanding, and we use the term merely that we
1006. may think or speak of THE ALL. For the purposes of thought and
1007. understanding, we are justified in thinking of Spirit as Infinite Living
1008. Mind, at the same time acknowledging that we cannot fully understand it.
1009. We must either do this or stop thinking of the matter at all.
  1010.
1011. Let us now proceed to a consideration of the nature of the Universe, as
1012. a whole and in its parts. What is the Universe? We have seen that there
1013. can be nothing outside of THE ALL. Then is the Universe THE ALL? No,
1014. this cannot be, because the Universe seems to be made up of MANY, and is
1015. constantly changing, and in other ways it does not measure up to the
1016. ideas that we are compelled to accept regarding THE ALL, as stated in
1017. our last lesson. Then if the Universe be not THE ALL, then it must be
1018. Nothing--such is the inevitable conclusion of the mind at first thought.
1019. But this will not satisfy the question, for we are sensible of the
1020. existence of the Universe. Then if the Universe is neither THE ALL, nor
1021. Nothing, what Can it be? Let us examine this question.
  1022.
1023. If the Universe exists at all, or seems to exist, it must proceed in
1024. some way from THE ALL--it must be a creation of THE ALL. But as
1025. something can never come from nothing, from what could THE ALL have
1026. created it. Some philosophers have answered this question by saying that
1027. THE ALL created the Universe from ITSELF--that is, from the being and
1028. substance of THE ALL. But this will not do, for THE ALL cannot be
1029. subtracted from, nor divided, as we have seen, and then again if this be
1030. so, would not each particle in the Universe be aware of its being THE
1031. ALL--THE ALL could not lose its knowledge of itself, nor actually BECOME
1032. an atom, or blind force, or lowly living thing. Some men, indeed,
1033. realizing that THE ALL is indeed ALL, and also recognizing that they,
1034. the men, existed, have jumped to the conclusion that they and THE ALL
1035. were identical, and they have filled the air with shouts of "I AM GOD,"
1036. to the amusement of the multitude and the sorrow of sages. The claim of
1037. the corpuscle that: "I am Man!" would be modest in comparison.
  1038.
1039. But, what indeed is the Universe, if it be not THE ALL, not yet created
1040. by THE ALL having separated itself into fragments? What else can it be--
1041. of what else can it be made? This is the great question. Let us examine
1042. it carefully. We find here that the "Principle of Correspondence" (see
1043. Lesson I.) comes to our aid here. The old Hermetic axiom, "As above so
1044. below," may be pressed into service at this point. Let us endeavor to
1045. get a glimpse of the workings on higher planes by examining those on our
1046. own. The Principle of Correspondence must apply to this as well as to
  1047. other problems.
  1048.
1049. Let us see! On his own plane of being, how does Man create? Well, first,
1050. he may create by making something out of outside materials. But this
1051. will not do, for there are no materials outside of THE ALL with which it
1052. may create. Well, then, secondly, Man pro-creates or reproduces his kind
1053. by the process of begetting, which is self-multiplication accomplished
1054. by transferring a portion of his substance to his offspring. But this
1055. will not do, because THE ALL cannot transfer or subtract a portion of
1056. itself, nor can it reproduce or multiply itself--in the first place
1057. there would be a taking away, and in the second case a multiplication or
1058. addition to THE ALL, both thoughts being an absurdity. Is there no third
1059. way in which MAN creates? Yes, there is--he CREATES MENTALLY! And in so
1060. doing he uses no outside materials, nor does he reproduce himself, and
1061. yet his Spirit pervades the Mental Creation.
  1062.
1063. Following the Principle of Correspondence, we are justified in
1064. considering that THE ALL creates the Universe MENTALLY, in a manner akin
1065. to the process whereby Man creates Mental Images. And, here is where the
1066. report of Reason tallies precisely with the report of the Illumined, as
1067. shown by their teachings and writings. Such are the teachings of the
1068. Wise Men. Such was the Teaching of Hermes.
  1069.
1070. THE ALL can create in no other way except mentally, without either using
1071. material (and there is none to use), or else reproducing itself (which
1072. is also impossible). There is no escape from this conclusion of the
1073. Reason, which, as we have said, agrees with the highest teachings of the
1074. Illumined. Just as you, student, may create a Universe of your own in
1075. your mentality, so does THE ALL create Universes in its own Mentality.
1076. But your Universe is the mental creation of a Finite Mind, whereas that
1077. of THE ALL is the creation of an Infinite. The two are similar in kind,
1078. but infinitely different in degree. We shall examine more closely into
1079. the process of creation and manifestation as we proceed. But this is the
1080. point to fix in your minds at this stage: THE UNIVERSE, AND ALL IT
1081. CONTAINS, IS A MENTAL CREATION OF THE ALL. Verily indeed, ALL IS MIND!
  1082.
1083.     "THE ALL creates in its Infinite Mind countless Universes,
1084.     which exist for aeons of Time--and yet, to THE ALL, the
1085.     creation, development, decline and death of a million Universes
1086.     is as the time of the twinkling of an eye."--The Kybalion.
  1087.
1088.     "The Infinite Mind of THE ALL is the womb of Universes."--The
  1089.     Kybalion.
  1090.
1091. The Principle of Gender (see Lesson I. and other lessons to follow) is
1092. manifested on all planes of life, material mental and spiritual. But,
1093. as we have said before, "Gender" does not mean "Sex" sex is merely a
1094. material manifestation of gender. "Gender" means "relating to generation
1095. or creation." And whenever anything is generated or created, on any
1096. plane, the Principle of Gender must be manifested. And this is true even
1097. in the creation of Universes.
  1098.
1099. Now do not jump to the conclusion that we are teaching that there is a
1100. male and female God, or Creator. That idea is merely a distortion of the
1101. ancient teachings on the subject. The true teaching is that THE ALL, in
1102. itself, is above Gender, as it is above every other Law, including those
1103. of Time and Space. It is the Law, from which the Laws proceed, and it is
1104. not subject to them. But when THE ALL manifests on the plane of
1105. generation or creation, then it acts according to Law and Principle, for
1106. it is moving on a lower plane of Being. And consequently it manifests
1107. the Principle of Gender, in its Masculine and Feminine aspects, on the
  1108. Mental Plane, of course.
  1109.
1110. This idea may seem startling to some of you who hear it for the first
1111. time, but you have all really passively accepted it in your everyday
1112. conceptions. You speak of the Fatherhood of God, and the Motherhood of
1113. Nature--of God, the Divine Father, and Nature the Universal Mother--and
1114. have thus instinctively acknowledged the Principle of Gender in the
1115. Universe. Is this not so?
  1116.
1117. But, the Hermetic teaching does not imply a real duality--THE ALL is
1118. ONE--the Two Aspects are merely aspects of manifestation. The teaching
1119. is that The Masculine Principle manifested by THE ALL stands, in a way,
1120. apart from the actual mental creation of the Universe. It projects its
1121. Will toward the Feminine Principle (which may be called "Nature")
1122. whereupon the latter begins the actual work of the evolution of the
1123. Universe, from simple "centers of activity" on to man, and then on and
1124. on still higher, all according to well-established and firmly enforced
1125. Laws of Nature. If you prefer the old figures of thought, you may think
1126. of the Masculine Principle as GOD, the Father, and of the Feminine
1127. Principle as NATURE, the Universal Mother, from whose womb all things
1128. have been born. This is more than a mere poetic figure of speech--it is
1129. an idea of the actual process of the creation of the Universe. But
1130. always remember, that THE ALL is but One, and that in its Infinite Mind
1131. the Universe is generated, created and exists.
  1132.
1133. It may help you to get the proper idea, if you will apply the Law of
1134. Correspondence to yourself, and your own mind. You know that the part of
1135. You which you call "I," in a sense, stands apart and witnesses the
1136. creation of mental Images in your own mind. The part of your mind in
1137. which the mental generation is accomplished may be called the "Me" in
1138. distinction from the "I" which stands apart and witnesses and examines
1139. the thoughts, ideas and images of the "Me."  "As above, so below,"
1140. remember, and the phenomena of one plane may be employed to solve the
1141. riddles of higher or lower planes.
  1142.
1143. Is it any wonder that You, the child, feel that instinctive reverence
1144. for THE ALL, which feeling we call "religion"--that respect, and
1145. reverence for THE FATHER MIND? Is it any wonder that, when you consider
1146. the works and wonders of Nature, you are overcome with a mighty feeling
1147. which has its roots away down in your inmost being? It is the MOTHER
1148. MIND that you are pressing close up to, like a babe to the breast.
  1149.
1150. Do not make the mistake of supposing that the little world you see
1151. around you--the Earth, which is a mere grain of dust in the Universe--is
1152. the Universe itself. There are millions upon millions of such worlds,
1153. and greater. And there are millions of millions of such Universes in
1154. existence within the Infinite Mind of THE ALL. And even in our own
1155. little solar system there are regions and planes of life far higher than
1156. ours, and beings compared to which we earth-bound mortals are as the
1157. slimy life-forms that dwell on the ocean's bed when compared to Man.
1158. There are beings with powers and attributes higher than Man has ever
1159. dreamed of the gods' possessing. And yet these beings were once as you,
1160. and still lower--and you will be even as they, and still higher, in
1161. time, for such is the Destiny of Man as reported by the Illumined.
  1162.
1163. And Death is not real, even in the Relative sense--it is but Birth to a
1164. new life--and You shall go on, and on, and on, to higher and still
1165. higher planes of life, for aeons upon aeons of time. The Universe is
1166. your home, and you shall explore its farthest recesses before the end of
1167. Time. You are dwelling in the Infinite Mind of THE ALL, and your
1168. possibilities and opportunities are infinite, both in time and space.
1169. And at the end of the Grand Cycle of Aeons, when THE ALL shall draw back
1170. into itself all of its creations--you will go gladly for you will then
1171. be able to know the Whole Truth of being At One with THE ALL. Such is
1172. the report of the Illumined--those who have advanced well along The
  1173. Path.
  1174.
1175. And, in the meantime, rest calm and serene--you are safe and protected
1176. by the Infinite Power of the FATHER-MOTHER MIND.
  1177.
1178.     "Within the Father-Mother Mind, mortal children are at
  1179.     home."--The Kybalion.
  1180.
1181.     "There is not one who is Fatherless, nor Motherless in the
  1182.     Universe."--The Kybalion.
  1183.
  1184.
  1185.
  1186. CHAPTER VI
  1187.
  1188. THE DIVINE PARADOX
  1189.
1190.     "The half-wise, recognizing the comparative unreality of
1191.     the Universe, imagine that they may defy its Laws--such
1192.     are vain and presumptuous fools, and they are broken against
1193.     the rocks and torn asunder by the elements by reason of
1194.     their folly. The truly wise, knowing the nature of the Universe,
1195.     use Law against laws; the higher against the lower; and by
1196.     the Art of Alchemy transmute that which is undesirable into
1197.     that which is worthy, and thus triumph. Mastery consists not
1198.     in abnormal dreams, visions and fantastic imaginings or
1199.     living, but in using the higher forces against the lower--escaping
1200.     the pains of the lower planes by vibrating on the higher.
1201.     Transmutation, not presumptuous denial, is the weapon of the
  1202.     Master."--The Kybalion.
  1203.
1204. This is the Paradox of the Universe, resulting from the Principle of
1205. Polarity which manifests when THE ALL begins to Create--hearken to it
1206. for it points the difference between half-wisdom and wisdom. While to
1207. THE INFINITE ALL, the Universe, its Laws, its Powers, its life, its
  1208. Phenomena, are as things witnessed in the state of Meditation or Dream;
1209. yet to all that is Finite, the Universe must be treated as Real, and
1210. life, and action, and thought, must be based thereupon, accordingly,
1211. although with an ever understanding of the Higher Truth. Each according
1212. to its own Plane and Laws. Were THE ALL to imagine that the Universe
1213. were indeed Reality, then woe to the Universe, for there would be then
1214. no escape from lower to higher, divineward--then would the Universe
1215. become a fixity and progress would become impossible. And if Man, owing
1216. to half-wisdom, acts and lives and thinks of the Universe as merely a
1217. dream (akin to his own finite dreams) then indeed does it so become for
1218. him, and like a sleep-walker he stumbles ever around and around in a
1219. circle, making no progress, and being forced into an awakening at last
1220. by his falling bruised and bleeding over the Natural Laws which he
1221. ignored. Keep your mind ever on the Star, but let your eyes watch over
1222. your footsteps, lest you fall into the mire by reason of your upward
1223. gaze. Remember the Divine Paradox, that while the Universe IS NOT, still
1224. IT IS. Remember ever the Two Poles of Truth the Absolute and the
  1225. Relative. Beware of Half-Truths.
  1226.
1227. What Hermetists know as "the Law of Paradox" is an aspect of the
1228. Principle of Polarity. The Hermetic writings are filled with references
1229. to the appearance of the Paradox in the consideration of the problems of
1230. Life and Being. The Teachers are constantly warning their students
1231. against the error of omitting the "other side" of any question. And
1232. their warnings are particularly directed to the problems of the Absolute
1233. and the Relative, which perplex all students of philosophy, and which
1234. cause so many to think and act contrary to what is generally known as
1235. "common sense." And we caution all students to be sure to grasp the
1236. Divine Paradox of the Absolute and Relative, lest they become entangled
1237. in the mire of the Half-Truth. With this in view this particular lesson
1238. has been written. Read it carefully!
  1239.
1240. The first thought that comes to the thinking man after he realizes the
1241. truth that the Universe is a Mental Creation of THE ALL, is that the
  1242. Universe and all that it contains is a mere illusion; an unreality;
1243. against which idea his instincts revolt. But this, like all other great
1244. truths, must be considered both from the Absolute and the Relative
1245. points of view. From the Absolute viewpoint, of course, the Universe is
1246. in the nature of an illusion, a dream, a phantasmagoria, as compared to
1247. THE ALL in itself. We recognize this even in our ordinary view, for we
1248. speak of the world as "a fleeting show" that comes and goes, is born and
1249. dies--for the element of impermanence and change, finiteness and
1250. unsubstantiality, must ever be connected with the idea of a created
1251. Universe when it is contrasted with the idea of THE ALL, no matter what
1252. may be our beliefs concerning the nature of both. Philosopher,
1253. metaphysician, scientist and theologian all agree upon this idea, and
1254. the thought is found in all forms of philosophical thought and religious
1255. conceptions, as well as in the theories of the respective schools of
  1256. metaphysics and theology.
  1257.
1258. So, the Hermetic Teachings do not preach the unsubstantiality of the
1259. Universe in any stronger terms than those more familiar to you, although
1260. their presentation of the subject may seem somewhat more startling.
1261. Anything that has a beginning and an ending must be, in a sense, unreal
1262. and untrue, and the Universe comes under the rule, in all schools of
1263. thought. From the Absolute point of view, there is nothing Real except
1264. THE ALL, no matter what terms we may use in thinking of, or discussing
1265. the subject. Whether the Universe be created of Matter, or whether it be
1266. a Mental Creation in the Mind of THE ALL--it is unsubstantial,
1267. non-enduring, a thing of time, space and change. We want you to realize
1268. this fact thoroughly, before you pass judgment on the Hermetic
1269. conception of the Mental nature of the Universe. Think over any and all
1270. of the other conceptions, and see whether this be not true of them.
  1271.
1272. But the Absolute point of view shows merely one side of the picture--the
1273. other side is the Relative one. Absolute Truth has been defined as
1274. "Things as the mind of God knows them," while Relative Truth is "Things
1275. as the highest reason of Man understands them." And so while to THE ALL
1276. the Universe must be unreal and illusionary, a mere dream or result of
1277. meditation,--nevertheless, to the finite minds forming a part of that
1278. Universe, and viewing it through mortal faculties, the Universe is very
1279. real indeed, and must be so considered. In recognizing the Absolute
1280. view, we must not make the mistake of ignoring or denying the facts and
1281. phenomena of the Universe as they present themselves to our mortal
1282. faculties--we are not THE ALL, remember.
  1283.
1284. To take familiar illustrations, we all recognize the fact that matter
1285. "exists" to our senses--we will fare badly if we do not. And yet, even
1286. our finite minds understand the scientific dictum that there is no such
1287. thing as Matter from a scientific point of view--that which we call
1288. Matter is held to be merely an aggregation of atoms, which atoms
1289. themselves are merely a grouping of units of force, called electrons or
1290. "ions," vibrating and in constant circular motion. We kick a stone and
1291. we feel the impact--it seems to be real, notwithstanding that we know it
1292. to be merely what we have stated above. But remember that our foot,
1293. which feels the impact by means of our brains, is likewise Matter, so
1294. constituted of electrons, and for that matter so are our brains. And, at
1295. the best, if it were not by reason of our Mind, we would not know the
1296. foot or stone at all.
  1297.
1298. Then again, the ideal of the artist or sculptor, which he is endeavoring
1299. to reproduce in stone or on canvas, seems very real to him. So do the
1300. characters in the mind of the author; or dramatist, which he seeks to
1301. express so that others may recognize them. And if this be true in the
1302. case of our finite minds, what must be the degree of Reality in the
1303. Mental Images created in the Mind of the Infinite? Oh, friends, to
1304. mortals this Universe of Mentality is very real indeed--it is the only
1305. one we can ever know, though we rise from plane to plane, higher and
1306. higher in it. To know it otherwise, but actual experience, we must be
1307. THE ALL itself. It is true that the higher we rise in the scale--the
1308. nearer to "the mind of the Father" we reach--the more apparent becomes
1309. the illusory nature of finite things, but not until THE ALL finally
1310. withdraws us into itself does the vision actually vanish.
  1311.
1312. So, we need not dwell upon the feature of illusion. Rather let us,
1313. recognizing the real nature of the Universe, seek to understand its
1314. mental laws, and endeavor to use them to the best effect in our upward
1315. progress through life, as we travel from plane to plane of being. The
1316. Laws of the Universe are none the less "Iron Laws" because of the mental
1317. nature. All, except THE ALL, are bound by them. What is IN THE INFINITE
1318. MIND OF THE ALL is REAL in a degree second only to that Reality itself
1319. which is vested in the nature of THE ALL.
  1320.
1321. So, do not feel insecure or afraid--we are all HELD FIRMLY IN THE
1322. INFINITE MIND OF THE ALL, and there is naught to hurt us or for us to
1323. fear. There is no Power outside of THE ALL to affect us. So we may rest
1324. calm and secure. There is a world of comfort and security in this
1325. realization when once attained. Then "calm and peaceful do we sleep,
1326. rocked in the Cradle of the Deep"--resting safely on the bosom of the
1327. Ocean of Infinite Mind, which is THE ALL. In THE ALL, indeed, do "we
1328. live and move and have our being."
  1329.
1330. Matter is none the less Matter to us, while we dwell on the plane of
1331. Matter, although we know it to be merely an aggregation of "electrons,"
1332. or particles of Force, vibrating rapidly and gyrating around each other
1333. in the formations of atoms; the atoms in turn vibrating and gyrating,
1334. forming molecules, which latter in turn form larger masses of Matter.
1335. Nor does Matter become less Matter, when we follow the inquiry still
1336. further, and learn from the Hermetic Teachings, that the "Force" of
1337. which the electrons are but units is merely a manifestation of the Mind
1338. of THE ALL, and like all else in the Universe is purely Mental in its
1339. nature. While on the Plane of matter, we must recognize its phenomena--
1340. we may control Matter (as all Masters of higher or lesser degree do),
1341. but we do so by applying the higher forces. We commit a folly when we
1342. attempt to deny the existence of Matter in the relative aspect. We may
1343. deny its mastery over us--and rightly so--but we should not attempt to
1344. ignore it in its relative aspect, at least so long as we dwell upon its
  1345. plane.
  1346.
1347. Nor do the Laws of Nature become less constant or effective, when we
1348. know them, likewise, to be merely mental creations. They are in full
1349. effect on the various planes. We overcome the lower laws, by applying
1350. still higher ones--and in this way only. But we cannot escape Law or
1351. rise above it entirely. Nothing but THE ALL can escape Law--and that
1352. because THE ALL is LAW itself, from which all Laws emerge. The most
1353. advanced Masters may acquire the powers usually attributed to the gods
1354. of men; and there are countless ranks of being, in the great hierarchy
1355. of life, whose being and power transcends even that of the highest
1356. Masters among men to a degree unthinkable by mortals, but even the
1357. highest Master, and the highest Being, must bow to the Law, and be as
1358. Nothing in the eye of THE ALL. So that if even these highest Beings,
1359. whose powers exceed even those attributed by men to their gods--if even
1360. these are bound by and are subservient to Law, then imagine the
1361. presumption of mortal man, of our race and grade, when he dares to
1362. consider the Laws of Nature as "unreal!" visionary and illusory, because
1363. he happens to be able to grasp the truth that the Laws are Mental in
1364. nature, and simply Mental Creations of THE ALL. Those Laws which THE ALL
1365. intends to be governing Laws are not to be defied or argued away. So
1366. long as the Universe endures, will they endure--for the Universe exists
1367. by virtue of these Laws which form its framework and which hold it
  1368. together.
  1369.
1370. The Hermetic Principle of Mentalism, while explaining the true nature of
1371. the Universe upon the principle that all is Mental, does not change the
1372. scientific conceptions of the Universe, Life, or Evolution. In fact,
1373. science merely corroborates the Hermetic Teachings. The latter merely
1374. teaches that the nature of the Universe is "Mental," while modern
1375. science has taught that it is "Material"; or (of late) that it is
1376. "Energy" at the last analysis. The Hermetic Teachings have no fault to
1377. find with Herbert Spencer's basic principle which postulates the
1378. existence of an "Infinite and Eternal Energy, from which all things
1379. proceed." In fact, the Hermetics recognize in Spencer's philosophy the
1380. highest outside statement of the workings of the Natural Laws that have
1381. ever been promulgated, and they believe Spencer to have been a
1382. reincarnation of an ancient philosopher who dwelt in ancient Egypt
1383. thousands of years ago, and who later incarnated as Heraclitus, the
1384. Grecian philosopher who lived B. C. 500. And they regard his statement
1385. of the "Infinite and Eternal Energy" as directly in the line of the
1386. Hermetic Teachings, always with the addition of their own doctrine
1387. that his "Energy" is the Energy of the Mind of THE ALL. With the
1388. Master-Key of the Hermetic Philosophy, the student of Spencer will be
1389. able to unlock many doors of the inner philosophical conceptions of the
1390. great English philosopher, whose work shows the results of the
1391. preparation of his previous incarnations. His teachings regarding
1392. Evolution and Rhythm are in almost perfect agreement with the Hermetic
1393. Teachings regarding the Principle of Rhythm.
  1394.
1395. So, the student of Hermetics need not lay aside any of his cherished
1396. scientific views regarding the Universe. All he is asked to do is to
1397. grasp the underlying principle of "THE ALL is Mind; the Universe is
1398. Mental--held in the mind of THE ALL." He will find that the other six of
1399. the Seven Principles will "fit into" his scientific knowledge, and will
1400. serve to bring out obscure points and to throw light in dark corners.
1401. This is not to be wondered at, when we realize the influence of the
1402. Hermetic thought of the early philosophers of Greece, upon whose
1403. foundations of thought the theories of modern science largely rest. The
1404. acceptance of the First Hermetic Principle (Mentalism) is the only great
1405. point of difference between Modern Science and Hermetic students, and
1406. Science is gradually moving toward the Hermetic position in its groping
1407. in the dark for a way out of the Labyrinth into which it has wandered in
  1408. its search for Reality.
  1409.
1410. The purpose of this lesson is to impress upon the minds of our students
1411. the fact that, to all intents and purposes, the Universe and its laws,
1412. and its phenomena, are just as REAL, so far as Man is concerned, as they
1413. would be under the hypotheses of Materialism or Energism. Under any
1414. hypothesis the Universe in its outer aspect is changing, ever-flowing,
1415. and transitory--and therefore devoid of substantiality and reality. But
1416. (note the other pole of the truth) under the same hypotheses, we are
1417. compelled to ACT AND LIVE as if the fleeting things were real and
1418. substantial. With this difference, always, between the various
1419. hypotheses--that under the old views Mental Power was ignored as a
1420. Natural Force, while under Mentalism it becomes the Greatest Natural
1421. Force. And this one difference revolutionizes Life, to those who
1422. understand the Principle and its resulting laws and practice.
  1423.
1424. So, finally, students all, grasp the advantage of Mentalism, and learn
1425. to know, use and apply the laws resulting therefrom. But do not yield to
1426. the temptation which, as The Kybalion states, overcomes the half-wise
1427. and which causes them to be hypnotized by the apparent unreality of
1428. things, the consequence being that they wander about like dream-people
1429. dwelling in a world of dreams, ignoring the practical work and life of
1430. man, the end being that "they are broken against the rocks and torn
1431. asunder by the elements, by reason of their folly." Rather follow the
1432. example of the wise, which the same authority states, "use Law against
1433. Laws; the higher against the lower; and by the Art of Alchemy transmute
1434. that which is undesirable into that which is worthy, and thus triumph."
1435. Following the authority, let us avoid the half-wisdom (which is folly)
1436. which ignores the truth that: "Mastery consists not in abnormal dreams,
1437. visions, and fantastic imaginings or living, but in using the higher
1438. forces against the lower--escaping the pains of the lower planes by
1439. vibrating on the higher." Remember always, student, that "Transmutation,
1440. not presumptuous denial, is the weapon of the Master." The above
1441. quotations are from The Kybalion, and are worthy of being committed to
  1442. memory by the student.
  1443.
1444. We do not live in a world of dreams, but in an Universe which while
1445. relative, is real so far as our lives and actions are concerned. Our
1446. business in the Universe is not to deny its existence, but to LIVE,
1447. using the Laws to rise from lower to higher--living on, doing the best
1448. that we can under the circumstances arising each day, and living, so far
1449. as is possible, to our biggest ideas and ideals. The true Meaning of
1450. Life is not known to men on this plane .if, indeed, to any--but the
1451. highest authorities, and our own intuitions, teach us that we will make
1452. no mistake in living up to the best that is in us, so far as is
1453. possible, and realising the Universal tendency in the same direction in
1454. spite of apparent evidence to the contrary. We are all on The Path--and
1455. the road leads upward ever, with frequent resting places.
  1456.
1457. Read the message of The Kybalion--and follow the example of "the
1458. wise"--avoiding the mistake of "the half-wise" who perish by reason of
  1459. their folly.
  1460.
  1461.
  1462.
  1463. CHAPTER VII
  1464.
  1465. "THE ALL" IN ALL
  1466.
1467.     "While All is in THE ALL, it is equally true that THE
1468.     ALL is in ALL.  To him who truly understands this
1469.     truth hath come great knowledge."--The Kybalion.
  1470.
1471. How often have the majority of people heard repeated the statement that
1472. their Deity (called by many names) was "All in All" and how little have
1473. they suspected the inner occult truth concealed by these carelessly
1474. uttered words? The commonly used expression is a survival of the ancient
1475. Hermetic Maxim quoted above. As the Kybalion says: "To him who truly
1476. understands this truth, hath come great knowledge." And, this being so,
1477. let us seek this truth, the understanding of which means so much. In
1478. this statement of truth--this Hermetic Maxim--is concealed one of the
1479. greatest philosophical, scientific and religious truths.
  1480.
1481. We have given you the Hermetic Teaching regarding the Mental Nature of
1482. the Universe--the truth that "the Universe is Mental--held in the Mind
1483. of THE ALL." As the Kybalion says, in the passage quoted above: "All is
1484. in THE ALL." But note also the co-related statement, that: "It is
1485. equally true that THE ALL is in ALL." This apparently contradictory
1486. statement is reconcilable under the Law of Paradox. It is, moreover, an
1487. exact Hermetic statement of the relations existing between THE ALL and
1488. its Mental Universe. We have seen how "All is in THE ALL"--now let us
1489. examine the other aspect of the subject.
  1490.
1491. The Hermetic Teachings are to the effect that THE ALL is Imminent in
1492. ("remaining within; inherent; abiding within") its Universe, and in
1493. every part, particle, unit, or combination, within the Universe. This
1494. statement is usually illustrated by the Teachers by a reference to the
1495. Principle of Correspondence. The Teacher instructs the student to form a
1496. Mental Image of something, a person, an idea, something having a mental
1497. form, the favorite example being that of the author or dramatist forming
1498. an idea of his characters; or a painter or sculptor forming an image of
1499. an ideal that he wishes to express by his art. In each case, the student
1500. will find that while the image has its existence, and being, solely
1501. within his own mind, yet he, the student, author, dramatist, painter, or
1502. sculptor, is, in a sense, immanent in; remaining within; or abiding
1503. within, the mental image also. In other words, the entire virtue, life,
1504. spirit, of reality in the mental image is derived from the "immanent
1505. mind" of the thinker. Consider this for a moment, until the idea is
  1506. grasped.
  1507.
1508. To take a modern example, let us say that Othello, Iago, Hamlet, Lear,
1509. Richard III, existed merely in the mind of Shakespeare, at the time of
1510. their conception or creation. And yet, Shakespeare also existed within
1511. each of these characters, giving them their vitality, spirit, and
1512. action. Whose is the "spirit" of the characters that we know as
1513. Micawber, Oliver Twist, Uriah Heep--is it Dickens, or have each of these
1514. characters a personal spirit, independent of their creator? Have the
1515. Venus of Medici, the Sistine Madonna, the Apollo Belvidere, spirits and
1516. reality of their own, or do they represent the spiritual and mental
1517. power of their creators? The Law of Paradox explains that both
1518. propositions are true, viewed from the proper viewpoints. Micawber is
1519. both Micawber, and yet Dickens. And, again, while Micawber may be said
1520. to be Dickens, yet Dickens is not identical with Micawber. Man, like
1521. Micawber, may exclaim: "The Spirit of my Creator is inherent within me--
1522. and yet I am not HE!" How different this from the shocking half-truth so
1523. vociferously announced by certain of the half-wise, who fill the air
1524. with their raucous cries of: "I am God!" Imagine poor Micawber, or the
1525. sneaky Uriah Heep, crying: "I Am Dickens"; or some of the lowly clods in
1526. one of Shakespeare's plays, eloquently announcing that: "I Am
1527. Shakespeare!" THE ALL is in the earthworm, and yet the earth-worm is far
1528. from being THE ALL. And still the wonder remains, that though the
1529. earth-worm exists merely as a lowly thing, created and having its being
1530. solely within the Mind of THE ALL--yet THE ALL is immanent in the
1531. earthworm, and in the particles that go to make up the earth-worm. Can
1532. there be any greater mystery than this of "All in THE ALL; and THE ALL
  1533. in All?"
  1534.
1535. The student will, of course, realize that the illustrations given above
1536. are necessarily imperfect and inadequate, for they represent the
1537. creation of mental images in finite minds, while the Universe is a
1538. creation of Infinite Mind--and the difference between the two poles
1539. separates them. And yet it is merely a matter of degree--the same
1540. Principle is in operation--the Principle of Correspondence manifests in
1541. each--"As above, so Below; as Below, so above."
  1542.
1543. And, in the degree that Man realizes the existence of the Indwelling
1544. Spirit immanent within his being, so will he rise in the spiritual scale
1545. of life. This is what spiritual development means--the recognition,
1546. realization, and manifestation of the Spirit within us. Try to remember
1547. this last definition--that of spiritual development. It contains the
  1548. Truth of True Religion.
  1549.
1550. There are many planes of Being--many sub-planes of Life--many degrees of
1551. existence in the Universe. And all depend upon the advancement of beings
1552. in the scale, of which scale the lowest point is the grossest matter,
1553. the highest being separated only by the thinnest division from the
1554. SPIRIT of THE ALL. And, upward and onward along this Scale of Life,
1555. everything is moving. All are on the Path, whose end is THE ALL. All
1556. progress is a Returning Home. All is Upward and Onward, in spite of all
1557. seemingly contradictory appearances. Such is the message of the
  1558. Illumined.
  1559.
1560. The Hermetic Teachings concerning the process of the Mental Creation of
1561. the Universe, are that at the beginning of the Creative Cycle, THE ALL,
1562. in its aspect of Being, projects its Will toward its aspect of
1563. "Becoming" and the process of creation begins. It is taught that the
1564. process consists of the lowering of Vibration until a very low degree of
1565. vibratory energy is reached, at which point the grossest possible form
1566. of Matter is manifested. This process is called the stage of Involution,
1567. in which THE ALL becomes "involved," or "wrapped up," in its creation.
1568. This process is believed by the Hermetists to have a Correspondence to
1569. the mental process of an artist, writer, or inventor, who becomes so
1570. wrapped up in his mental creation as to almost forget his own existence
1571. and who, for the time being, almost "lives in his creation," If instead
1572. of "wrapped" we use the word "rapt," perhaps we will give a better idea
  1573. of what is meant.
  1574.
1575. This Involuntary stage of Creation is sometimes called the "Outpouring"
1576. of the Divine Energy, just as the Evolutionary state is called the
1577. "Indrawing." The extreme pole of the Creative process is considered to
1578. be the furthest removed from THE ALL, while the beginning of the
1579. Evolutionary stage is regarded as the beginning of the return swing of
1580. the pendulum of Rhythm--a "coming home" idea being held in all of the
  1581. Hermetic Teachings.
  1582.
1583. The Teachings are that during the "Outpouring," the vibrations become
1584. lower and lower until finally the urge ceases, and the return swing
1585. begins. But there is this difference, that while in the "Outpouring" the
1586. creative forces manifest compactly and as a whole, yet from the
1587. beginning of the Evolutionary or "Indrawing" stage, there is manifested
1588. the Law of Individualization--that is, the tendency to separate into
1589. Units of Force, so that finally that which left THE ALL as
1590. unindividualized energy returns to its source as countless highly
1591. developed Units of Life, having risen higher and higher in the scale by
1592. means of Physical, Mental and Spiritual Evolution.
  1593.
1594. The ancient Hermetists use the word "Meditation" in describing the
1595. process of the mental creation of the Universe in the Mind of THE ALL,
1596. the word "Contemplation" also being frequently employed. But the idea
1597. intended seems to be that of the employment of the Divine Attention.
1598. "Attention" is a word derived from the Latin root, meaning "to reach
1599. out; to stretch out," and so the act of Attention is really a mental
1600. "reaching out; extension" of mental energy, so that the underlying idea
1601. is readily understood when we examine into the real meaning of
  1602. "Attention."
  1603.
1604. The Hermetic Teachings regarding the process of Evolution are that, THE
1605. ALL, having meditated upon the beginning of the Creation--having thus
1606. established the material foundations of the Universe--having thought it
1607. into existence--then gradually awakens or rouses from its Meditation and
1608. in so doing starts into manifestation the process of Evolution, on the
1609. material mental and spiritual planes, successively and in order. Thus
1610. the upward movement begins--and all begins to move Spiritward. Matter
1611. becomes less gross; the Units spring into being; the combinations begin
1612. to form; Life appears and manifests in higher and higher forms; and Mind
1613. becomes more and more in evidence--the vibrations constantly becoming
1614. higher. In short, the entire process of Evolution, in all of its phases,
1615. begins, and proceeds according to the established "Laws of the
1616. Indrawing" process. All of this occupies aeons upon aeons of Man's time,
1617. each aeon containing countless millions of years, but yet the Illumined
1618. inform us that the entire creation, including Involution and Evolution,
1619. of an Universe, is but "as the twinkle of the eye" to THE ALL.  At the
1620. end of countless cycles of aeons of time, THE ALL withdraws its
1621. Attention--its Contemplation and Meditation--of the Universe, for the
1622. Great Work is finished--and All is withdrawn into THE ALL from which it
1623. emerged. But Mystery of Mysteries--the Spirit of each soul is not
1624. annihilated, but is infinitely expanded--the Created and the Creator are
1625. merged. Such is the report of the Illumined!
  1626.
1627. The above illustration of the "meditation," and subsequent "awakening
1628. from meditation," of THE ALL, is of course but an attempt of the
1629. teachers to describe the Infinite process by a finite example. And, yet:
1630. "As Below, so Above." The difference is merely in degree. And just as
1631. THE ALL arouses itself from the meditation upon the Universe, so does
1632. Man (in time) cease from manifesting upon the Material Plane, and
1633. withdraws himself more and more into the Indwelling Spirit, which is
  1634. indeed "The Divine Ego."
  1635.
1636. There is one more matter of which we desire to speak in this lesson, and
1637. that comes very near to an invasion of the Metaphysical field of
1638. speculation, although our purpose is merely to show the futility of such
1639. speculation. We allude to the question which inevitably comes to the
1640. mind of all thinkers who have ventured to seek the Truth. The question
1641. is: "WHY does THE ALL create Universes" The question may be asked in
1642. different forms, but the above is the gist of the inquiry.
  1643.
1644. Men have striven hard to answer this question, but still there is no
1645. answer worthy of the name. Some have imagined that THE ALL had something
1646. to gain by it, but this is absurd, for what could THE ALL gain that it
1647. did not already possess? Others have sought the answer in the idea that
1648. THE ALL "wished something to love" and others that it created for
1649. pleasure, or amusement; or because it "was lonely" or to manifest its
1650. power;--all puerile explanations and ideas, belonging to the childish
  1651. period of thought.
  1652.
1653. Others have sought to explain the mystery by assuming that THE ALL found
1654. itself "compelled" to create, by reason of its own "internal
1655. nature"--its "creative instinct." This idea is in advance of the others,
1656. but its weak point lies in the idea of THE ALL being "compelled" by
1657. anything, internal or external. If its "internal nature," or "creative
1658. instinct," compelled it to do anything, then the "internal nature" or
1659. "creative instinct" would be the Absolute, instead of THE ALL, and so
1660. accordingly that part of the proposition falls. And, yet, THE ALL does
1661. create and manifest, and seems to find some kind of satisfaction in so
1662. doing. And it is difficult to escape the conclusion that in some
1663. infinite degree it must have what would correspond to an "inner nature,"
1664. or "creative instinct," in man, with correspondingly infinite Desire and
1665. Will. It could not act unless it Willed to Act; and it would not Will to
1666. Act, unless it Desired to Act and it would not Desire to Act unless it
1667. obtained some Satisfaction thereby. And all of these things would belong
1668. to an "Inner Nature," and might be postulated as existing according to
1669. the Law of Correspondence. But, still, we prefer to think of THE ALL as
1670. acting entirely FREE from any influence, internal as well as external.
1671. That is the problem which lies at the root of difficulty--and the
1672. difficulty that lies at the root of the problem.
  1673.
1674. Strictly speaking, there cannot be said to be any "Reason" whatsoever
1675. for THE ALL to act, for a "reason" implies a "cause," and THE ALL is
1676. above Cause and Effect, except when it Wills to become a Cause, at which
1677. time the Principle is set into motion. So, you see, the matter is
1678. Unthinkable, just as THE ALL is Unknowable. Just as we say THE ALL
1679. merely "IS"--so we are compelled to say that "THE ALL ACTS BECAUSE IT
  1680. ACTS." At the last, THE ALL is All Reason in Itself; All Law in Itself;
1681. All Action in Itself--and it may be said, truthfully, that THE ALL is
1682. Its Own Reason; its own Law; its own Act--or still further, that THE
1683. ALL; Its Reason; Its Act; is Law; are ONE, all being names for the same
1684. thing. In the opinion of those who are giving you these present lessons,
1685. the answer is locked up in the INNER SELF of THE ALL, along with its
1686. Secret of Being. The Law of Correspondence, in our opinion, reaches only
1687. to that aspect of THE ALL, which may be spoken of as "The Aspect of
1688. BECOMING." Back of that Aspect is "The Aspect of BEING" in which all
  1689. Laws are lost in LAW; all Principles merge into PRINCIPLE--and THE ALL;
1690. PRINCIPLE; and BEING; are IDENTICAL, ONE AND THE SAME. Therefore,
1691. Metaphysical speculation on this point is futile. We go into the matter
1692. here, merely to show that we recognize the question, and also the
1693. absurdity of the ordinary answers of metaphysics and theology.
  1694.
1695. In conclusion, it may be of interest to our students to learn that while
1696. some of the ancient, and modern, Hermetic Teachers have rather inclined
1697. in the direction of applying the Principle of Correspondence to the
1698. question, with the result of the "Inner Nature" conclusion,--still the
1699. legends have it that HERMES, the Great, when asked this question by his
1700. advanced students, answered them by PRESSING HIS LIPS TIGHTLY TOGETHER
1701. and saying not a word, indicating that there WAS NO ANSWER. But, then,
1702. he may have intended to apply the axiom of his philosophy, that: "The
1703. lips of Wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding,"
1704. believing that even his advanced students did not possess the
1705. Understanding which entitled them to the Teaching. At any rate, if
1706. Hermes possessed the Secret, he failed to impart it, and so far as the
1707. world is concerned THE LIPS OF HERMES ARE CLOSED regarding it. And where
1708. the Great Hermes hesitated to speak, what mortal may dare to teach?
  1709.
1710. But, remember, that whatever be the answer to this problem, if indeed
1711. there be an answer the truth remains that:  "While All is in THE ALL, it
1712. is equally true that THE ALL is in All." The Teaching on this point is
1713. emphatic. And, we may add the concluding words of the quotation: "To him
1714. who truly understands this truth, hath come great knowledge."
  1715.
  1716.
  1717.
  1718. CHAPTER VIII
  1719.
  1720. PLANES OF CORRESPONDENCE
  1721.
1722.     "As above, so below; as below, so above."--The Kybalion.
  1723.
1724. The great Second Hermetic Principle embodies the truth that there is a
1725. harmony, agreement, and correspondence between the several planes of
1726. Manifestation, Life and Being. This truth is a truth because all that is
1727. included in the Universe emanates from the same source, and the same
1728. laws, principles, and characteristics apply to each unit, or combination
1729. of units, of activity, as each manifests its own phenomena upon its own
  1730. plane.
  1731.
1732. For the purpose of convenience of thought and study, the Hermetic
1733. Philosophy considers that the Universe may be divided into three great
1734. classes of phenomena, known as the Three Great Planes, namely:
  1735.
1736.     1. The Great Physical Plane.
1737.     2. The Great Mental Plane.
1738.     3. The Great Spiritual Plane.
  1739.
1740. These divisions are more or less artificial and arbitrary, for the truth
1741. is that all of the three divisions are but ascending degrees of the
1742. great scale of Life, the lowest point of which is undifferentiated
1743. Matter, and the highest point that of Spirit. And, moreover, the
1744. different Planes shade into each other, so that no hard and fast
1745. division may be made between the higher phenomena of the Physical and
1746. the lower of the Mental; or between the higher of the Mental and the
  1747. lower of the Physical.
  1748.
1749. In short, the Three Great Planes may be regarded as three great groups
1750. of degrees of Life Manifestation. While the purposes of this little book
1751. do not allow us to enter into an extended discussion of, or explanation
1752. of, the subject of these different planes, still we think it well to
1753. give a general description of the same at this point.
  1754.
1755. At the beginning we may as well consider the question so often asked by
1756. the neophyte, who desires to be informed regarding the meaning of the
1757. word "Plane", which term has been very freely used, and very poorly
1758. explained, in many recent works upon the subject of occultism. The
1759. question is generally about as follows: "Is a Plane a place having
1760. dimensions, or is it merely a condition or state?" We answer: "No, not a
1761. place, nor ordinary dimension of space; and yet more than a state or
1762. condition. It may be considered as a state or condition, and yet the
1763. state or condition is a degree of dimension, in a scale subject to
1764. measurement." Somewhat paradoxical, is it not? But let us examine the
1765. matter. A "dimension," you know, is "a measure in a straight line,
1766. relating to measure," etc. The ordinary dimensions of space are length,
1767. breadth, and height, or perhaps length, breadth, height, thickness or
1768. circumference. But there is another dimension of "created things" or
1769. "measure in a straight line," known to occultists, and to scientists as
1770. well, although the latter have not as yet applied the term "dimension"
1771. to it--and this new dimension, which, by the way, is the much speculated
1772. -about "Fourth Dimension," is the standard used in determining the
  1773. degrees or "planes."
  1774.
1775. This Fourth Dimension may be called "The Dimension of Vibration" It is a
1776. fact well known to modern science, as well as to the Hermetists who have
1777. embodied the truth in their "Third Hermetic Principle," that "everything
1778. is in motion; everything vibrates; nothing is at rest."  From the
1779. highest manifestation, to the lowest, everything and all things Vibrate.
1780. Not only do they vibrate at different rates of motion, but as in
1781. different directions and in a different manner. The degrees of the rate
1782. of vibrations constitute the degrees of measurement on the Scale of
1783. Vibrations--in other words the degrees of the Fourth Dimension. And
1784. these degrees form what occultists call "Planes" The higher the degree
1785. of rate of vibration, the higher the plane, and the higher the
1786. manifestation of Life occupying that plane. So that while a plane is not
1787. "a place," nor yet "a state or condition," yet it possesses qualities
1788. common to both. We shall have more to say regarding the subject of the
1789. scale of Vibrations in our next lessons, in which we shall consider the
  1790. Hermetic Principle of Vibration.
  1791.
1792. You will kindly remember, however, that the Three Great Planes are not
1793. actual divisions of the phenomena of the Universe, but merely arbitrary
1794. terms used by the Hermetists in order to aid in the thought and study of
1795. the various degrees and Forms of universal activity and life. The atom
1796. of matter, the unit of force, the mind of man, and the being of the arch
1797. -angel are all but degrees in one scale, and all fundamentally the same,
1798. the difference between solely a matter of degree, and rate of
1799. vibration--all are creations of THE ALL, and have their existence solely
1800. within the Infinite Mind of THE ALL.
  1801.
1802. The Hermetists sub-divide each of the Three Great Planes into Seven
1803. Minor Planes, and each of these latter are also sub-divided into seven
1804. sub-planes, all divisions being more or less arbitrary, shading into
1805. each other, and adopted merely for convenience of scientific study and
  1806. thought.
  1807.
1808. The Great Physical Plane, and its Seven Minor Planes, is that division
1809. of the phenomena of the Universe which includes all that relates to
1810. physics, or material things, forces, and manifestations. It includes all
1811. forms of that which we call Matter, and all forms of that which we call
1812. Energy or Force. But you must remember that the Hermetic Philosophy does
1813. not recognize Matter as a thing in itself, or as having a separate
1814. existence even in the Mind of THE ALL. The Teachings are that Matter is
1815. but a form of Energy--.that is, Energy at a low rate of vibrations of a
1816. certain kind. And accordingly the Hermetists classify Matter under the
1817. head of Energy, and give to it three of the Seven Minor Planes of the
  1818. Great Physical Plane.
  1819.
1820. These Seven Minor Physical Planes are as follows:
  1821.
  1822.     1. The Plane of Matter (A)
  1823.     2. The Plane of Matter (B)
  1824.     3. The Plane of Matter (C)
1825.     4. The Plane of Ethereal Substance
  1826.     5. The Plane of Energy (A)
  1827.     6. The Plane of Energy (B)
  1828.     7. The Plane of Energy (C)
  1829.
1830. The Plane of Matter (A) comprises the forms of Matter in its form of
1831. solids, liquids, and gases, as generally recognized by the text-books on
1832. physics. The Plane of Matter (B) comprises certain higher and more
1833. subtle forms of Matter of the existence of which modern science is but
1834. now recognizing, the phenomena of Radiant Matter, in its phases of
1835. radium, etc., belonging to the lower sub-division of this Minor Plane.
1836. The Plane of Matter (C) comprises forms of the most subtle and tenuous
1837. Matter, the existence of which is not suspected by ordinary scientists.
1838. The Plane of Ethereal Substance comprises that which science speaks of
1839. as "The Ether", a substance of extreme tenuity and elasticity, pervading
1840. all Universal Space, and acting as a medium for the transmission of
1841. waves of energy, such as light, heat, electricity, etc. This Ethereal
1842. Substance forms a connecting link between Matter (so-called) and Energy,
1843. and partakes of the nature of each. The Hermetic Teachings, however,
1844. instruct that this plane has seven sub-divisions (as have all of the
1845. Minor Planes), and that in fact there are seven ethers, instead of but
  1846. one.
  1847.
1848. Next above the Plane of Ethereal Substance comes the Plane of Energy
1849. (A), which comprises the ordinary forms of Energy known to science, its
  1850. seven sub-planes being, respectively, Heat; Light; Magnetism;
1851. Electricity, and Attraction (including Gravitation, Cohesion, Chemical
1852. Affinity, etc.) and several other forms of energy indicated by
1853. scientific experiments but not as yet named or classified. The Plane of
1854. Energy (B) comprises seven subplanes of higher forms of energy not as
1855. yet discovered by science, but which have been called "Nature's Finer
1856. Forces" and which are called into operation in manifestations of certain
1857. forms of mental phenomena, and by which such phenomena becomes possible.
1858. The Plane of Energy (C) comprises seven sub-planes of energy so highly
1859. organized that it bears many of the characteristics of "life," but which
1860. is not recognized by the minds of men on the ordinary plane of
1861. development, being available for the use on beings of the Spiritual
1862. Plane alone--such energy is unthinkable to ordinary man, and may be
1863. considered almost as "the divine power." The beings employing the same
1864. are as "gods" compared even to the highest human types known to us.
  1865.
1866. The Great Mental Plane comprises those forms of "living things" known to
1867. us in ordinary life, as well as certain other forms not so well known
1868. except to the occultist. The classification of the Seven Minor Mental
1869. Planes is more or less satisfactory and arbitrary (unless accompanied by
1870. elaborate explanations which are foreign to the purpose of this
1871. particular work), but we may as well mention them. They are as follows:
  1872.
1873.     1. The Plane of Mineral Mind
1874.     2. The Plane of Elemental Mind (A)
1875.     3. The Plane of Plant Mind
1876.     4. The Plane of Elemental Mind (B)
1877.     5. The Plane of Animal Mind
1878.     6. The Plane of Elemental Mind (C)
1879.     7. The Plane of Human Mind
  1880.
1881. The Plane of Mineral Mind comprises the "states or conditions" of the
1882. units or entities, or groups and combinations of the same, which animate
1883. the forms known to us as "minerals, chemicals, etc." These entities must
1884. not be confounded with the molecules, atoms and corpuscles themselves,
1885. the latter being merely the material bodies or forms of these entities,
1886. just as a man's body is but his material form and not "himself." These
1887. entities may be called "souls" in one sense, and are living beings of a
1888. low degree of development, life, and mind--just a little more than the
1889. units of "living energy" which comprise the higher sub-divisions of the
1890. highest Physical Plane. The average mind does not generally attribute
1891. the possession of mind, soul, or life, to the mineral kingdom, but all
1892. occultists recognize the existence of the same, and modern science is
1893. rapidly moving forward to the point-of-view of the Hermetic, in this
1894. respect. The molecules, atoms and corpuscles have their "loves and
1895. hates"; "likes and dislikes"; "attractions and repulsions". "affinities
1896. and non-affinities," etc., and some of the more daring of modern
1897. scientific minds have expressed the opinion that the desire and will,
1898. emotions and feelings, of the atoms differ only in degree from those of
1899. men. We have no time or space to argue this matter here. All occultists
1900. know it to be a fact, and others are referred to some of the more recent
1901. scientific works for outside corroboration. There are the usual seven
  1902. sub-divisions to this plane.
  1903.
1904. The Plane of Elemental Mind (A) comprises the state or condition, and
1905. degree of mental and vital development of a class of entities unknown to
1906. the average man, but recognized to occultists. They are invisible to the
1907. ordinary senses of man, but, nevertheless, exist and play their part of
1908. the Drama of the Universe. Their degree of intelligence is between that
1909. of the mineral and chemical entities on the one hand, and of the
1910. entities of the plant kingdom on the other. There are seven subdivisions
  1911. to this plane, also.
  1912.
1913. The Plane of Plant Mind, in its seven sub-divisions, comprises the
1914. states or conditions of the entities comprising the kingdoms of the
1915. Plant World, the vital and mental phenomena of which is fairly well
1916. understood by the average intelligent person, many new and interesting
1917. scientific works regarding "Mind and Life in Plants" having been
1918. published during the last decade. Plants have life, mind and "souls," as
1919. well as have the animals, man, and super-man.
  1920.
1921. The Plane of Elemental Mind (B), in its seven sub-divisions, comprises
1922. the states and conditions of a higher form of "elemental" or unseen
1923. entities, playing their part in the general work of the Universe, the
1924. mind and life of which form a part of the scale between the Plane of
1925. Plant Mind and the Plane of Animal Mind, the entities partaking of the
  1926. nature of both.
  1927.
1928. The Plane of Animal Mind, in its seven sub-divisions, comprises the
1929. states and conditions of the entities, beings, or souls, animating the
1930. animal forms of life, familiar to us all. It is not necessary to go into
1931. details regarding this kingdom or plane of life, for the animal world is
1932. as familiar to us as is our own.
  1933.
1934. The Plane of Elemental Mind (C), in its seven sub-divisions, comprises
1935. those entities or beings, invisible as are all such elemental forms,
1936. which partake of the nature of both animal and human life in a degree
1937. and in certain combinations. The highest forms are semi-human in
  1938. intelligence.
  1939.
1940. The Plane of Human Mind, in its seven sub-divisions, comprises those
1941. manifestations of life and mentality which are common to Man, in his
1942. various grades, degrees, and divisions. In this connection, we wish to
1943. point out the fact that the average man of today occupies but the fourth
1944. sub-division of the Plane of Human Mind, and only the most intelligent
1945. have crossed the borders of the Fifth Sub-Division. It has taken the
1946. race millions of years to reach this stage, and it will take many more
1947. years for the race to move on to the sixth and seventh sub-divisions,
1948. and beyond. But, remember, that there have been races before us which
1949. have passed through these degrees, and then on to higher planes. Our own
1950. race is the fifth (with stragglers from the fourth) which has set foot
1951. upon The Path. And, then there are a few advanced souls of our own race
1952. who have outstripped the masses, and who have passed on to the sixth and
1953. seventh sub-division, and some few being still further on. The man of
1954. the Sixth Sub-Division will be "The Super-Man"; he of the Seventh will
  1955. be "The Over-Man."
  1956.
1957. In our consideration of the Seven Minor Mental Planes, we have merely
1958. referred to the Three Elementary Planes in a general way. We do not wish
1959. to go into this subject in detail in this work, for it does not belong
1960. to this part of the general philosophy and teachings. But we may say
1961. this much, in order to give you a little clearer idea, of the relations
1962. of these planes to the more familiar ones--the Elementary Planes bear
1963. the same relation to the Planes of Mineral, Plant, Animal and Human
1964. Mentality and Life, that the black keys on the piano do to the white
1965. keys. The white keys are sufficient to produce music, but there are
1966. certain scales, melodies, and harmonies, in which the black keys play
1967. their part, and in which their presence is necessary. They are also
1968. necessary as "connecting links" of soul-condition; entity states, etc.,
1969. between the several other planes, certain forms of development being
1970. attained therein--this last fact giving to the reader who can "read
1971. between the lines" a new light upon the processes of Evolution, and a
1972. new key to the secret door of the "leaps of life" between kingdom and
1973. kingdom.  The great kingdoms of Elementals are fully recognized by all
1974. occultists, and the esoteric writings are full of mention of them.  The
1975. readers of Bulwer's "Sanoni" and similar tales will recognize the
1976. entities inhabiting these planes of life.
  1977.
1978. Passing on from the Great Mental Plane to the Great Spiritual Plane,
1979. what shall we say? How can we explain these higher states of Being, Life
1980. and Mind, to minds as yet unable to grasp and understand the higher
1981. subdivisions of the Plane of Human Mind? The task is impossible. We can
1982. speak only in the most general terms. How may Light be described to a
1983. man born blind--how sugar, to a man who has never tasted anything
1984. sweet--how harmony, to one born deaf?
  1985.
1986. All that we can say is that the Seven Minor Planes of the Great
1987. Spiritual Plane (each Minor Plane having its seven sub-divisions)
1988. comprise Beings possessing Life, Mind and Form as far above that of Man
1989. of to-day as the latter is above the earth-worm, mineral or even certain
1990. forms of Energy or Matter. The Life of these Beings so far transcends
1991. ours, that we cannot even think of the details of the same; their minds
1992. so far transcend ours, that to them we scarcely seem to "think," and our
1993. mental processes seem almost akin to material processes; the Matter of
1994. which their forms are composed is of the highest Planes of Matter, nay,
1995. some are even said to be "clothed in Pure Energy." What may be said of
  1996. such Beings?
  1997.
1998. On the Seven Minor Planes of the Great Spiritual Plane exist Beings of
1999. whom we may speak as Angels; Archangels; Demi-Gods. On the lower Minor
2000. Planes dwell those great souls whom we call Masters and Adepts. Above
2001. them come the Great Hierarchies of the Angelic Hosts, unthinkable to
2002. man; and above those come those who may without irreverence be called
2003. "The Gods," so high in the scale of Being are they, their being,
2004. intelligence and power being akin to those attributed by the races of
2005. men to their conceptions of Deity. These Beings are beyond even the
2006. highest flights of the human imagination, the word "Divine" being the
2007. only one applicable to them. Many of these Beings, as well as the
2008. Angelic Host, take the greatest interest in the affairs of the Universe
2009. and play an important part in its affairs. These Unseen Divinities and
2010. Angelic Helpers extend their influence freely and powerfully, in the
2011. process of Evolution, and Cosmic Progress. Their occasional intervention
2012. and assistance in human affairs have led to the many legends, beliefs,
2013. religions and traditions of the race, past and present. They have
2014. superimposed their knowledge and power upon the world, again and again,
2015. all under the Law of THE ALL, of course.
  2016.
2017. But, yet, even the highest of these advanced Beings exist merely as
2018. creations of, and in, the Mind of THE ALL, and are subject to the Cosmic
2019. Processes and Universal Laws. They are still Mortal. We may call them
2020. "gods" if we like, but still they are but the Elder Brethren of the
2021. Race,--the advanced souls who have outstripped their brethren, and who
2022. have foregone the ecstasy of Absorption by THE ALL, in order to help the
2023. race on its upward journey along The Path. But, they belong to the
2024. Universe, and are subject to its conditions--they are mortal--and their
2025. plane is below that of Absolute Spirit.
  2026.
2027. Only the most advanced Hermetists are able to grasp the Inner Teachings
2028. regarding the state of existence, and the powers manifested on the
2029. Spiritual Planes. The phenomena is so much higher than that of the
2030. Mental Planes that a confusion of ideas would surely result from an
2031. attempt to describe the same. Only those whose minds have been carefully
2032. trained along the lines of the Hermetic Philosophy for years--yes, those
2033. who have brought with them from other incarnations the knowledge
2034. acquired previously--can comprehend just what is meant by the Teaching
2035. regarding these Spiritual Planes. And much of these Inner Teachings is
2036. held by the Hermetists as being too sacred, important and even dangerous
2037. for general public dissemination. The intelligent student may recognize
2038. what we mean by this when we state that the meaning of "Spirit" as used
2039. by the Hermetists is akin to "Living Power"; "Animated Force;" "Inner
2040. Essence;" "Essence of Life," etc., which meaning must not be confounded
2041. with that usually and commonly employed in connection with the term,
2042. i.e., "religious; ecclesiastical; spiritual; ethereal; holy," etc., etc.
2043. To occultists the word "Spirit" is used in the sense of "The Animating
2044. Principle," carrying with it the idea of Power, Living Energy, Mystic
2045. Force, etc. And occultists know that that which is known to them as
2046. "Spiritual Power" may be employed for evil as well as good ends (in
2047. accordance with the Principle of Polarity), a fact which has been
2048. recognized by the majority of religions in their conceptions of Satan,
2049. Beelzebub, the Devil, Lucifer, Fallen Angels, etc. And so the knowledge
2050. regarding these Planes has been kept in the Holy of Holies in all
2051. Esoteric Fraternities and Occult Orders,--in the Secret Chamber of the
2052. Temple. But this may be said here, that those who have attained high
2053. spiritual powers and have misused them, have a terrible fate in store
2054. for them, and the swing of the pendulum of Rhythm will inevitably swing
2055. them back to the furthest extreme of Material existence, from which
2056. point they must retrace their steps Spiritward, along the weary rounds
2057. of The Path, but always with the added torture of having always with
2058. them a lingering memory of the heights from which they fell owing to
2059. their evil actions. The legends of the Fallen Angels have a basis in
2060. actual facts, as all advanced occultists know. The striving for selfish
2061. power on the Spiritual Planes inevitably results in the selfish soul
2062. losing its spiritual balance and falling back as far as it had
2063. previously risen. But to even such a soul, the opportunity of a return
2064. is given--and such souls make the return journey, paying the terrible
2065. penalty according to the invariable Law.
  2066.
2067. In conclusion we would again remind you that according to the Principle
2068. of Correspondence, which embodies the truth: "As Above so Below; as
2069. Below, so Above," all of the Seven Hermetic Principles are in full
2070. operation on all of the many planes, Physical Mental and Spiritual. The
2071. Principle of Mental Substance of course applies to all the planes, for
2072. all are held in the Mind of THE ALL. The Principle of Correspondence
2073. manifests in all, for there is a correspondence, harmony and agreement
2074. between the several planes. The Principle of Vibration manifests on all
2075. planes, in fact the very differences that go to make the "planes" arise
2076. from Vibration, as we have explained. The Principle of Polarity
2077. manifests on each plane, the extremes of the Poles being apparently
2078. opposite and contradictory. The Principle of Rhythm manifests on each
2079. Plane, the movement of the phenomena having its ebb and flow, rise and
2080. flow, incoming and outgoing. The Principle of Cause and Effect manifests
2081. on each Plane, every Effect having its Cause and every Cause having its
2082. effect. The Principle of Gender manifests on each Plane, the Creative
2083. Energy being always manifest, and operating along the lines of its
  2084. Masculine and Feminine Aspects.
  2085.
2086. "As Above so Below; as Below, so Above." This centuries old Hermetic
2087. axiom embodies one of the great Principles of Universal Phenomena. As we
2088. proceed with our consideration of the remaining Principles, we will see
2089. even more clearly the truth of the universal nature of this great
  2090. Principle of Correspondence.
  2091.
  2092.
  2093.
  2094. CHAPTER IX
  2095.
  2096. VIBRATION
  2097.
2098.     "Nothing rests; everything moves; everything
  2099.     vibrates."--The Kybalion.
  2100.
2101. The great Third Hermetic Principle--the Principle of Vibration--embodies
2102. the truth that Motion is manifest in everything in the Universe--that
2103. nothing is at rest--that everything moves, vibrates, and circles. This
2104. Hermetic Principle was recognized by some of the early Greek philosophers
2105. who embodied it in their systems. But, then, for centuries it was lost
2106. sight of by the thinkers outside of the Hermetic ranks. But in the
2107. Nineteenth Century physical science re-discovered the truth and the
2108. Twentieth Century scientific discoveries have added additional proof of
2109. the correctness and truth of this centuries-old Hermetic doctrine.
  2110.
2111. The Hermetic Teachings are that not only is everything in constant
2112. movement and vibration, but that the "differences" between the various
2113. manifestations of the universal power are due entirely to the varying
2114. rate and mode of vibrations. Not only this, but that even THE ALL, in
2115. itself, manifests a constant vibration of such an infinite degree of
2116. intensity and rapid motion that it may be practically considered as at
2117. rest, the teachers directing the attention of the students to the fact
2118. that even on the physical plane a rapidly moving object (such as a
2119. revolving wheel) seems to be at rest. The Teachings are to the effect
2120. that Spirit is at one end of the Pole of Vibration, the other Pole being
2121. certain extremely gross forms of Matter. Between these two poles are
2122. millions upon millions of different rates and modes of vibration.
  2123.
2124. Modern Science has proven that all that we call Matter and Energy are
2125. but "modes of vibratory motion," and some of the more advanced
2126. scientists are rapidly moving toward the positions of the occultists who
2127. hold that the phenomena of Mind are likewise modes of vibration or
2128. motion. Let us see what science has to say regarding the question of
2129. vibrations in matter and energy.
  2130.
2131. In the first place, science teaches that all matter manifests, in some
2132. degree, the vibrations arising from temperature or heat. Be an object
2133. cold or hot--both being but degrees of the same things--it manifests
2134. certain heat vibrations, and in that sense is in motion and vibration.
2135. Then all particles of Matter are in circular movement, from corpuscle to
2136. suns. The planets revolve around suns, and many of them turn on their
2137. axes. The suns move around greater central points, and these are
2138. believed to move around still greater, and so on, ad infinitum. The
2139. molecules of which the particular kinds of Matter are composed are in a
2140. state of constant vibration and movement around each other and against
2141. each other. The molecules are composed of Atoms, which, likewise, are in
2142. a state of constant movement and vibration. The atoms are composed of
2143. Corpuscles, sometimes called "electrons," "ions," etc., which also are
2144. in a state of rapid motion, revolving around each other, and which
2145. manifest a very rapid state and mode of vibration. And, so we see that
2146. all forms of Matter manifest Vibration, in accordance with the Hermetic
  2147. Principle of Vibration.
  2148.
2149. And so it is with the various forms of Energy. Science teaches that
2150. Light, Heat, Magnetism and Electricity are but forms of vibratory motion
2151. connected in some way with, and probably emanating from the Ether.
2152. Science does not as yet attempt to explain the nature of the phenomena
2153. known as Cohesion, which is the principle of Molecular Attraction; nor
2154. Chemical Affinity, which is the principle of Atomic Attraction; nor
2155. Gravitation (the greatest mystery of the three), which is the principle
2156. of attraction by which every particle or mass of Matter is bound to
2157. every other particle or mass. These three forms of Energy are not as yet
2158. understood by science, yet the writers incline to the opinion that these
2159. too are manifestations of some form of vibratory energy, a fact which
2160. the Hermetists have held and taught for ages past.
  2161.
2162. The Universal Ether, which is postulated by science without its nature
2163. being understood clearly, is held by the Hermetists to be but a higher
2164. manifestation of that which is erroneously called matter--that is to
2165. say, Matter at a higher degree of vibration--and is called by them "The
2166. Ethereal Substance." The Hermetists teach that this Ethereal Substance
2167. is of extreme tenuity and elasticity, and pervades universal space,
2168. serving as a medium of transmission of waves of vibratory energy, such
2169. as heat, light, electricity, magnetism, etc. The Teachings are that The
2170. Ethereal Substance is a connecting link between the forms of vibratory
2171. energy known as "Matter" on the one hand, and "Energy or Force" on the
2172. other; and also that it manifests a degree of vibration, in rate and
  2173. mode, entirely its own.
  2174.
2175. Scientists have offered the illustration of a rapidly moving wheel, top,
2176. or cylinder, to show the effects of increasing rates of vibration. The
2177. illustration supposes a wheel, top, or revolving cylinder, running at a
2178. low rate of speed--we will call this revolving thing "the object" in
2179. following out the illustration. Let us suppose the object moving slowly.
2180. It may be seen readily, but no sound of its movement reaches the ear.
2181. The speed is gradually increased. In a few moments its movement becomes
2182. so rapid that a deep growl or low note may be heard. Then as the rate is
2183. increased the note rises one in the musical scale. Then, the motion
2184. being still further increased, the next highest note is distinguished.
2185. Then, one after another, all the notes of the musical scale appear,
2186. rising higher and higher as the motion is increased. Finally when the
2187. motions have reached a certain rate the final note perceptible to human
2188. ears is reached and the shrill, piercing shriek dies away, and silence
2189. follows. No sound is heard from the revolving object, the rate of motion
2190. being so high that the human ear cannot register the vibrations. Then
2191. comes the perception of rising degrees of Heat. Then after quite a time
2192. the eye catches a glimpse of the object becoming a dull dark reddish
2193. color. As the rate increases, the red becomes brighter. Then as the
2194. speed is increased, the red melts into an orange. Then the orange melts
2195. into a yellow. Then follow, successively, the shades of green, blue,
2196. indigo, and finally violet, as the rate of sped increases. Then the
2197. violet shades away, and all color disappears, the human eye not
2198. being able to register them. But there are invisible rays emanating from
2199. the revolving object, the rays that are used in photographing, and other
2200. subtle rays of light. Then begin to manifest the peculiar rays known as
2201. the "X Rays," etc., as the constitution of the object changes.
2202. Electricity and Magnetism are emitted when the appropriate rate of
  2203. vibration is attained.
  2204.
2205. When the object reaches a certain rate of vibration its molecules
2206. disintegrate, and resolve themselves into the original elements or
2207. atoms. Then the atoms, following the Principle of Vibration, are
2208. separated into the countless corpuscles of which they are composed. And
2209. finally, even the corpuscles disappear and the object may be said to Be
2210. composed of The Ethereal Substance. Science does not dare to follow the
2211. illustration further, but the Hermetists teach that if the vibrations be
2212. continually increased the object would mount up the successive states of
2213. manifestation and would in turn manifest the various mental stages, and
2214. then on Spiritward, until it would finally re-enter THE ALL, which is
2215. Absolute Spirit. The "object," however, would have ceased to be an
2216. "object" long before the stage of Ethereal Substance was reached, but
2217. otherwise the illustration is correct inasmuch as it shows the effect of
2218. constantly increased rates and modes of vibration. It must be
2219. remembered, in the above illustration, that at the stages at which the
2220. "object" throws off vibrations of light, heat, etc., it is not actually
2221. "resolved" into those forms of energy (which are much higher in the
2222. scale), but simply that it reaches a degree of vibration in which those
2223. forms of energy are liberated, in a degree, from the confining
2224. influences of its molecules, atoms and corpuscles, as the case may be.
2225. These forms of energy, although much higher in the scale than matter,
2226. are imprisoned and confined in the material combinations, by reason of
2227. the energies manifesting through, and using material forms, but thus
2228. becoming entangled and confined in their creations of material forms,
2229. which, to an extent, is true of all creations, the creating force
2230. becoming involved in its creation.
  2231.
2232. But the Hermetic Teachings go much further than do those of modern
2233. science. They teach that all manifestation of thought, emotion, reason,
2234. will or desire, or any mental state or condition, are accompanied by
2235. vibrations, a portion of which are thrown off and which tend to affect
2236. the minds of other persons by "induction." This is the principle which
2237. produces the phenomena of "telepathy"; mental influence, and other forms
2238. of the action and power of mind over mind, with which the general public
2239. is rapidly becoming acquainted, owing to the wide dissemination of
2240. occult knowledge by the various schools, cults and teachers along these
  2241. lines at this time.
  2242.
2243. Every thought, emotion or mental state has its corresponding rate and
2244. mode of vibration. And by an effort of the will of the person, or of
2245. other persons, these mental states may be reproduced, just as a musical
2246. tone may be reproduced by causing an instrument to vibrate at a certain
2247. rate--just as color may be reproduced in the same may. By a knowledge of
2248. the Principle of Vibration, as applied to Mental Phenomena, one may
2249. polarize his mind at any degree he wishes, thus gaining a perfect
2250. control over his mental states, moods, etc. In the same way he may
2251. affect the minds of others, producing the desired mental states in them.
2252. In short, he may be able to produce on the Mental Plane that which
2253. science produces on the Physical Plane--namely, "Vibrations at Will."
2254. This power of course may be acquired only by the proper instruction,
2255. exercises, practice, etc., the science being that of Mental
2256. Transmutation, one of the branches of the Hermetic Art.
  2257.
2258. A little reflection on what we have said will show the student that the
2259. Principle of Vibration underlies the wonderful phenomena of the power
2260. manifested by the Masters and Adepts, who are able to apparently set
2261. aside the Laws of Nature, but who, in reality, are simply using one law
2262. against another; one principle against others; and who accomplish their
2263. results by changing the vibrations of material objects, or forms of
2264. energy, and thus perform what are commonly called "miracles."
  2265.
2266. As one of the old Hermetic writers has truly said: "He who understands
2267. the Principle of Vibration, has grasped the scepter of Power."
  2268.
  2269.
  2270.
  2271. CHAPTER X
  2272.
  2273. POLARITY
  2274.
2275.     "Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything
  2276.     has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same;
  2277.     opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree;
2278.     extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes
  2279.     may be reconciled."--The Kybalion.
  2280.
2281. The great Fourth Hermetic Principle--the Principle of Polarity embodies
  2282. the truth that all manifested things have "two sides"; "two aspects";
2283. "two poles"; a "pair of opposites," with manifold degrees between the
2284. two extremes. The old paradoxes, which have ever perplexed the mind of
2285. men, are explained by an understanding of this Principle. Man has always
2286. recognized something akin to this Principle, and has endeavored to
2287. express it by such sayings, maxims and aphorisms as the following:
2288. "Everything is and isn't, at the same time"; "all truths are but
2289. half-truths"; "every truth is half-false"; "there are two sides to
2290. everything"--"there is a reverse side to every shield," etc., etc.
  2291.
2292. The Hermetic Teachings are to the effect that the difference between
2293. things seemingly diametrically opposed to each other is merely a matter
2294. of degree. It teaches that "the pairs of opposites may be reconciled,"
2295. and that "thesis and anti-thesis are identical in nature, but different
2296. in degree"; and that the "universal reconciliation of opposites" is
2297. effected by a recognition of this Principle of Polarity. The teachers
2298. claim that illustrations of this Principle may be had on every hand, and
2299. from an examination into the real nature of anything. They begin by
2300. showing that Spirit and Matter are but the two poles of the same thing,
2301. the intermediate planes being merely degrees of vibration. They show
2302. that THE ALL and The Many are the same, the difference being merely a
2303. matter of degree of Mental Manifestation. Thus the LAW and Laws are the
2304. two opposite poles of one thing. Likewise, PRINCIPLE and Principles.
2305. Infinite Mind and finite minds.
  2306.
2307. Then passing on to the Physical Plane, they illustrate the Principle by
2308. showing that Heat and Cold are identical in nature, the differences
2309. being merely a matter of degrees. The thermometer shows many degrees of
2310. temperature, the lowest pole being called "cold," and the highest
2311. "heat." Between these two poles are many degrees of "heat" or "cold,"
2312. call them either and you are equally correct. The higher of two degrees
2313. is always "warmer," while the lower is always "colder." There is no
2314. absolute standard-all is a matter of degree. There is no place on the
2315. thermometer where heat ceases and cold begins. It is all a matter of
2316. higher or lower vibrations. The very terms "high" and "low," which we
2317. are compelled to use, are but poles of the same thing-the terms are
2318. relative. So with "East and West"--travel around the world in an
2319. eastward direction, and you reach a point which is called west at your
2320. starting point, and you return from that westward point. Travel far
2321. enough North, and you will find yourself traveling South, or vice versa.
  2322.
2323. Light and Darkness are poles of the same thing, with many degrees
2324. between them. The musical scale is the same--starting with "C" you move
2325. upward until you reach another "C" and so on, the differences between
2326. the two ends of the board being the same, with many degrees between the
2327. two extremes. The scale of color is the same-higher and lower vibrations
2328. being the only difference between high violet and low red. Large and
2329. Small are relative. So are Noise and Quiet; Hard and Soft follow the
2330. rule. Likewise Sharp and Dull. Positive and Negative are two poles of
2331. the same thing, with countless degrees between them.
  2332.
2333. Good and Bad are not absolute--we call one end of the scale Good and the
2334. other Bad, or one end Good and the other Evil, according to the use of
  2335. the terms. A thing is "less good" than the thing higher in the scale;
2336. but that "less good" thing, in turn, is "more good" than the thing next
2337. below it--and so on, the "more or less" being regulated by the position
  2338. on the scale.
  2339.
2340. And so it is on the Mental Plane. "Love and. Hate" are generally
2341. regarded as being things diametrically opposed to each other; entirely
2342. different; unreconcilable. But we apply the Principle of Polarity; we
2343. find that there is no such thing as Absolute Love or Absolute Hate, as
2344. distinguished from each other. The two are merely terms applied to the
2345. two poles of the same thing. Beginning at any point of the scale we find
2346. "more love," or "less hate," as we ascend the scale; and "more hate" or
2347. "less love" as we descend this being true no matter from what point,
2348. high or low, we may start. There are degrees of Love and Hate, and there
2349. is a middle point where "Like and Dislike" become so faint that it is
2350. difficult to distinguish between them. Courage and Fear come under the
2351. same rule. The Pairs of Opposites exist everywhere. Where you find one
2352. thing you find its opposite-the two poles.
  2353.
2354. And it is this fact that enables the Hermetist to transmute one mental
2355. state into another, along the lines of Polarization. Things belonging to
2356. different classes cannot be transmuted into each other, but things of
2357. the same class may be changed, that is, may have their polarity changed.
2358. Thus Love never becomes East or West, or Red or Violet-but it may and
2359. often does turn into Hate and likewise Hate may be transformed into
2360. Love, by changing its polarity. Courage may be transmuted into Fear, and
2361. the reverse. Hard things may be rendered Soft. Dull things become Sharp.
2362. Hot things become Cold. And so on, the transmutation always being
2363. between things of the same kind of different degrees. Take the case of a
2364. Fearful man. By raising his mental vibrations along the line of Fear-
2365. Courage, he can be filled with the highest degree of Courage and
2366. Fearlessness. And, likewise, the Slothful man may change himself into an
2367. Active, Energetic individual simply by polarizing along the lines of the
  2368. desired quality.
  2369.
2370. The student who is familiar with the processes by which the various
2371. schools of Mental Science, etc., produce changes in the mental states of
2372. those following their teachings, may not readily understand the
2373. principle underlying many of these changes. When, however, the Principle
2374. of Polarity is once grasped, and it is seen that the mental changes are
2375. occasioned by a change of polarity-a sliding along the same scale-the
2376. hatter is readily understood. The change is not in the nature of a
2377. transmutation of one thing into another thing entirely different-but is
2378. merely a change of degree in the same things, a vastly important
2379. difference. For instance, borrowing an analogy from the Physical Plane,
2380. it is impossible to change Heat into Sharpness, Loudness, Highness,
2381. etc., but Heat may readily be transmuted into Cold, simply by lowering
  2382. the vibrations. In the same way Hate and Love are mutually transmutable;
2383. so are Fear and Courage. But Fear cannot be transformed into Love, nor
2384. can Courage be transmuted into Hate. The mental states belong to
2385. innumerable classes, each class of which has its opposite poles, along
  2386. which transmutation is possible.
  2387.
2388. The student will readily recognize that in the mental states, as well as
2389. in the phenomena of the Physical Plane, the two poles may be classified
  2390. as Positive and Negative, respectively. Thus Love is Positive to Hate;
2391. Courage to Fear; Activity to Non-Activity, etc., etc. And it will also
2392. be noticed that even to those unfamiliar with the Principle of
2393. Vibration, the Positive pole seems to be of a higher degree than the
2394. Negative, and readily dominates it. The tendency of Nature is in the
2395. direction of the dominant activity of the Positive pole.
  2396.
2397. In addition to the changing of the poles of one's own mental states by
2398. the operation of the art of Polarization, the phenomena of Mental
2399. Influence, in its manifold phases, shows us that the principle may be
2400. extended so as to embrace the phenomena of the influence of one mind
2401. over that of another, of which so much has been written and taught of
2402. late years. When it is understood that Mental Induction is possible,
2403. that is that mental states may be produced by "induction" from others,
2404. then we can readily see how a certain rate of vibration, or polarization
2405. of a certain mental state, may be communicated to another person, and
2406. his polarity in that class of mental states thus changed. It is along
2407. this principle that the results of many of the "mental treatments" are
2408. obtained. For instance, a person is "blue," melancholy and full of fear.
2409. A mental scientist bringing his own mind up to the desired vibration by
2410. his trained will, and thus obtaining the desired polarization in his own
2411. case, then produces a similar mental state in the other by induction,
2412. the result being that the vibrations are raised and the person polarizes
2413. toward the Positive end of the scale instead toward the Negative, and
2414. his Fear and other negative emotions are transmuted to Courage and
2415. similar positive mental states. A little study will show you that these
2416. mental changes are nearly all along the line of Polarization, the change
2417. being one of degree rather than of kind.
  2418.
2419. A knowledge of the existence of this great Hermetic Principle will
2420. enable the student to better understand his own mental states, and those
2421. of other people. He will see that these states are all matters of
2422. degree, and seeing thus, he will be able to raise or lower the vibration
2423. at will--to change his mental poles, and thus be Master of his mental
2424. states, instead of being their servant and slave. And by his knowledge
2425. he will be able to aid his fellows intelligently and by the appropriate
2426. methods change the polarity when the same is desirable. We advise all
2427. students to familiarize themselves with this Principle of Polarity, for
2428. a correct understanding of the same will throw light on many difficult
  2429. subjects.
  2430.
  2431.
  2432.
  2433. CHAPTER XI
  2434.
  2435. RHYTHM
  2436.
  2437.     "Everything flows out and in; everything has its tides;
2438.     all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests
2439.     in everything; the measure of the swing to the right,
2440.     is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm
  2441.     compensates"--The Kybalion.
  2442.
2443. The great Fifth Hermetic Principle--the Principle of Rhythm-embodies the
2444. truth that in everything there is manifested a measured motion; a
2445. to-and-from movement; a flow and inflow; a swing forward and backward; a
  2446. pendulum-like movement; a tide-like ebb and flow; a high-tide and a low-
2447. tide; between the two-poles manifest on the physical, mental or
2448. spiritual planes. The Principle of rhythm is closely connected with the
2449. Principle of Polarity described in the preceding chapter. Rhythm
2450. manifests between the two poles established by the Principle of
2451. Polarity. This does not mean, however, that the pendulum of Rhythm
2452. swings to the extreme poles, for this rarely happens; in fact, it is
2453. difficult to establish the extreme polar opposites in the majority of
2454. cases. But the swing is ever "toward" first one pole and then the other.
  2455.
2456. There is always an action and reaction; an advance and a retreat; a
2457. rising and a sinking; manifested in all of the airs and phenomena of the
2458. Universe. Suns, worlds, men, animals, plants, minerals, forces, energy,
2459. mind and matter, yes, even Spirit, manifests this Principle. The
2460. Principle manifests in the creation and destruction of worlds; in the
2461. rise and fall of nations; in the life history of all things; and finally
2462. in the mental states of Man.
  2463.
2464. Beginning with the manifestations of Spirit--of THE ALL--it will be
2465. noticed that there is ever the Outpouring and the Indrawing; the
2466. "Outbreathing and Inbreathing of Brahm," as the Brahmans word it.
2467. Universes are created; reach their extreme low point of materiality; and
2468. then begin in their upward swing. Suns spring into being, and then their
2469. height of power being reached, the process of retrogression begins, and
2470. after aeons they become dead masses of matter, awaiting another impulse
2471. which starts again their inner energies into activity and a new solar
2472. life cycle is begun. And thus it is with all the worlds; they are born,
2473. grow and die; only to be reborn. And thus it is with all the things of
  2474. shape and form; they swing from action to reaction; from birth to death;
2475. from activity to inactivity--and then back again. Thus it is with all
2476. living things; they are born, grow, and die--and then are reborn. So it
2477. is with all great movements, philosophies, creeds, fashions,
2478. governments, nations, and all else-birth, growth, maturity, decadence,
2479. death-and then new-birth. The swing of the pendulum is ever in evidence.
  2480.
2481. Night follows day; and day night. The pendulum swings from Summer to
2482. Winter, and then back again. The corpuscles, atoms, molecules, and all
2483. masses of matter, swing around the circle of their nature. There is no
2484. such thing as absolute rest, or cessation from movement, and all
2485. movement partakes of rhythm. The principle is of universal application.
2486. It may be applied to any question, or phenomena of any of the many
2487. planes of life. It may be applied to all phases of human activity.
2488. There is always the Rhythmic swing from one pole to the other. The
2489. Universal Pendulum is ever in motion. The Tides of Life flow in and out,
  2490. according to Law.
  2491.
2492. The Principle of rhythm is well understood by modern science, and is
2493. considered a universal law as applied to material things. But the
2494. Hermetists carry the principle much further, and know that its
2495. manifestations and influence extend to the mental activities of Man, and
2496. that it accounts for the bewildering succession of moods, feelings and
2497. other annoying and perplexing changes that we notice in ourselves. But
2498. the Hermetists by studying the operations of this Principle have learned
2499. to escape some of its activities by Transmutation.
  2500.
2501. The Hermetic Masters long since discovered that while the Principle of
2502. Rhythm was invariable, and ever in evidence in mental phenomena, still
2503. there were two planes of its manifestation so far as mental phenomena
2504. are concerned. They discovered that there were two general planes of
2505. Consciousness, the Lower and the Higher, the understanding of which fact
2506. enabled them to rise to the higher plane and thus escape the swing of
2507. the Rhythmic pendulum which manifested on the lower plane. In other
2508. words, the swing of the pendulum occurred on the Unconscious Plane, and
2509. the Consciousness was not affected. This they call the Law of
2510. Neutralization. Its operations consist in the raising of the Ego above
2511. the vibrations of the Unconscious Plane of mental activity, so that the
2512. negative-swing of the pendulum is not manifested in consciousness, and
2513. therefore they are not affected. It is akin to rising above a thing and
2514. letting it pass beneath you. The Hermetic Master, or advanced student,
2515. polarizes himself at the desired pole, and by a process akin to
2516. "refusing" to participate in the backward swing or, if you prefer, a
2517. "denial" of its influence over him, he stands firm in his polarized
2518. position, and allows the mental pendulum to swing back along the
2519. unconscious plane. All individuals who have attained any degree of self-
2520. mastery, accomplish this, more or less unknowingly, and by refusing to
2521. allow their moods and negative mental states to affect them, they apply
2522. the Law of Neutralization. The Master, however, carries this to a much
2523. higher degree of proficiency, and by the use of his Will he attains
2524. a degree of Poise and Mental Firmness almost impossible of belief on the
2525. part of those who allow themselves to be swung backward and forward by
2526. the mental pendulum of moods and feelings.
  2527.
2528. The importance of this will be appreciated by any thinking person who
2529. realizes what creatures of moods, feelings and emotion the majority of
2530. people are, and how little mastery of themselves they manifest. If you
2531. will stop and consider a moment, you will realize how much these swings
2532. of Rhythm have affected you in your life--how a period of Enthusiasm has
2533. been invariably followed by an opposite feeling and mood of Depression.
2534. Likewise, your moods and periods of Courage have been succeeded by equal
2535. moods of Fear. And so it has ever been with the majority of
2536. persons--tides of feeling have ever risen and fallen with them, but they
2537. have never suspected the cause or reason of the mental phenomena. An
2538. understanding of the workings of this Principle will give one the key to
2539. the Mastery of these rhythmic swings of feeling, and will enable him to
2540. know himself better and to avoid being carried away by these inflows and
2541. outflows. The Will is superior to the conscious manifestation of this
2542. Principle, although the Principle itself can never be destroyed. We may
2543. escape its effects, but the Principle operates, nevertheless. The
2544. pendulum ever swings, although we may escape being carried along with
  2545. it.
  2546.
2547. There are other features of the operation of this Principle of Rhythm of
2548. which we wish to speak at this point. There comes into its operations
2549. that which is known as the Law of Compensation. One of the definitions
2550. or meanings of the word "Compensate" is, "to counterbalance" which is
2551. the sense in which the Hermetists use the term. It is this Law of
2552. Compensation to which the Kybalion refers when it says: "The measure of
2553. the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm
  2554. compensates."
  2555.
2556. The Law of Compensation is that the swing in one direction determines
2557. the swing in the opposite direction, or to the opposite pole-the one
2558. balances, or counterbalances, the other. On the Physical Plane we see
2559. many examples of this Law. The pendulum of the clock swings a certain
2560. distance to the right, and then an equal distance to the left. The
2561. seasons balance each other in the same way. The tides follow the same
2562. Law. And the same Law is manifested in all the phenomena of Rhythm. The
2563. pendulum, with a short swing in one direction, has but a short swing in
2564. the other; while the long swing to the right invariably means the long
2565. swing to the left.  An object hurled upward to a certain height has an
2566. equal distance to traverse on its return. The force with which a
2567. projectile is sent upward a mile is reproduced when the projectile
2568. returns to the earth on its return journey. This Law is constant on the
2569. Physical Plane, as reference to the standard authorities will show you.
  2570.
2571. But the Hermetists carry it still further. They teach that a man's
2572. mental states are subject to the same Law. The man who enjoys keenly, is
2573. subject to keen suffering; while he who feels but little pain is capable
2574. of feeling but little joy. The pig suffers but little mentally, and
2575. enjoys but little--he is compensated. And on the other hand, there are
2576. other animals who enjoy keenly, but whose nervous organism and
2577. temperament cause them to suffer exquisite degrees of pain and so it is
2578. with Man. There are temperaments which permit of but low degrees of
2579. enjoyment, and equally low degrees of suffering; while there are others
2580. which permit the most intense enjoyment, but also the most intense
2581. suffering. The rule is that the capacity for pain and pleasure, in each
2582. individual, are balanced. The Law of Compensation is in full operation
  2583. here.
  2584.
2585. But the Hermetists go still further in this matter. They teach that
2586. before one is able to enjoy a certain degree of pleasure, he must have
2587. swung as far, proportionately, toward the other pole of feeling. They
2588. hold, however, that the Negative is precedent to the Positive in this
2589. matter, that is to say that in experiencing a certain degree of pleasure
2590. it does not follow that he will have to "pay up for it" with a
2591. corresponding degree of pain; on the contrary, the pleasure is the
2592. Rhythmic swing, according to the Law of Compensation, for a degree of
2593. pain previously experienced either in the present life, or in a previous
2594. incarnation. This throws a new light on the Problem of Pain.
  2595.
2596. The Hermetists regard the chain of lives as continuous, and as forming a
2597. part of one life of the individual, so that in consequence the rhythmic
2598. swing is understood in this way, while it would be without meaning
2599. unless the truth of reincarnation is admitted.
  2600.
2601. But the Hermetists claim that the Master or advanced student is able, to
2602. a great degree, to escape the swing toward Pain, by the process of
2603. Neutralization before mentioned. By rising on to the higher plane of the
2604. Ego, much of the experience that comes to those dwelling on the lower
2605. plane is avoided and escaped.
  2606.
2607. The Law of Compensation plays an important part in the lives of men and
2608. women. It will be noticed that one generally "pays the price" of
2609. anything he possesses or lacks. If he has one thing, he lacks
2610. another--the balance is struck. No one can "keep his penny and have the
2611. bit of cake" at the same time Everything has its pleasant and unpleasant
2612. sides. The things that one gains are always paid for by the things that
2613. one loses. The rich possess much that the poor lack, while the poor
2614. often possess things that are beyond the reach of the rich. The
2615. millionaire may have the inclination toward feasting, and the wealth
2616. wherewith to secure all the dainties and luxuries of the table, while he
2617. lacks the appetite to enjoy the same; he envies the appetite and
2618. digestion of the laborer who lacks the wealth and inclinations of the
2619. millionaire, and who gets more pleasure from his plain food than the
2620. millionaire could obtain even if his appetite were not jaded, nor his
2621. digestion ruined, for the wants, habits and inclinations differ. And so
2622. it is through life. The Law of Compensation is ever in operation,
2623. striving to balance and counter-balance, and always succeeding in time,
2624. even though several lives may be required for the return swing of the
  2625. Pendulum of Rhythm.
  2626.
  2627.
  2628.
  2629. CHAPTER XII
  2630.
  2631. CAUSATION
  2632.
  2633.     "Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause;
2634.     everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a
2635.     name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of
2636.     causation, but nothing escapes the Law."--The Kybalion.
  2637.
2638. The great Sixth Hermetic Principle--the Principle of Cause and
2639. Effect--embodies the truth that Law pervades the Universe; that nothing
2640. happens by Chance; that Chance is merely a term indicating cause
2641. existing but not recognized or perceived; that phenomena is continuous,
  2642. without break or exception.
  2643.
2644. The Principle of Cause and Effect underlies all scientific thought,
2645. ancient and modern, and was enunciated by the Hermetic Teachers in the
2646. earliest days. While many and varied disputes between the many schools
2647. of thought have since arisen, these disputes have been principally upon
2648. the details of the operations of the Principle, and still more often
2649. upon the meaning of certain words. The underlying Principle of Cause and
2650. Effect has been accepted as correct by practically all the thinkers of
2651. the world worthy of the name. To think otherwise would be to take the
2652. phenomena of the universe from the domain of Law and Order, and to
2653. relegate it; to the control of the imaginary something which men have
  2654. called "Chance."
  2655.
2656. A little consideration will show anyone that there is in reality no such
2657. thing as pure chance. Webster defines the word "Chance" as follows: "A
  2658. supposed agent or mode of activity other than a force, law or purpose;
2659. the operation or activity of such agent; the supposed effect of such an
2660. agent; a happening; fortuity; casualty, etc." But a little consideration
2661. will show you that there can be no such agent as "Chance," in the sense
2662. of something outside of Law-something outside of Cause and Effect. How
2663. could there be a something acting in the phenomenal universe,
2664. independent of the laws, order, and continuity of the latter? Such a
2665. something would be entirely independent of the orderly trend of the
2666. universe, and therefore superior to it. We can imagine nothing outside
2667. of THE ALL being outside of the Law, and that only because THE ALL is
2668. the LAW in itself. There is no room in the universe for a something
2669. outside of and independent of Law. The existence of such a Something
2670. would render all Natural Laws ineffective, and would plunge the universe
2671. into chaotic disorder and lawlessness.
  2672.
2673. A careful examination will show that what we call "Chance" is merely an
  2674. expression relating to obscure causes; causes that we cannot perceive;
2675. causes that we cannot understand. The word Chance is derived from a word
2676. Meaning "to fall" (as the falling of dice), the idea being that the fall
2677. of the dice (and many other happenings) are merely a "happening"
2678. unrelated to any cause. And this is the sense in which the term is
2679. generally employed. But when the matter is closely examined, it is seen
2680. that there is no chance whatsoever about the fall of the dice. Each time
2681. a die falls, and displays a certain number, it obeys a law as infallible
2682. as that which governs the revolution of the planets around the sun. Back
2683. of the fall of the die are causes, or chains of causes, running back
  2684. further than the mind can follow. The position of the die in the box;
2685. the amount of muscular energy expended in the throw; the condition of
2686. the table, etc., etc., all are causes, the effect of which may be seen.
2687. But back of these seen causes there are chains of unseen preceding
2688. causes, all of which had a bearing upon the number of the die which fell
  2689. uppermost.
  2690.
2691. If a die be cast a great number of times, it will be found that the
2692. numbers shown will be about equal, that is, there will be an equal
2693. number of one-spot, two-spot, etc., coming uppermost. Toss a penny in
2694. the air, and it may come down either "heads" or "tails"; but make a
2695. sufficient number of tosses, and the heads and tails will about even up.
2696. This is the operation of the law of average. But both the average and
2697. the single toss come under the Law of Cause and Effect, and if we were
2698. able to examine into the preceding causes, it would be clearly seen that
2699. it was simply impossible for the die to fall other than it did, under
2700. the same circumstances and at the same time. Given the same causes, the
2701. same results will follow. There is always a "cause" and a "because" to
2702. every event. Nothing ever "happens" without a cause, or rather a chain
  2703. of causes.
  2704.
2705. Some confusion has arisen in the minds of persons considering this
2706. Principle, from the fact that they were unable to explain how one thing
2707. could cause another thing--that is, be the "creator" of the second
2708. thing. As a matter of fact, no "thing" ever causes or "creates" another
2709. "thing." Cause and Effect deals merely with "events." An "event" is
2710. "that which comes, arrives or happens, as a result or consequent of some
2711. preceding event." No event "creates" another event, but is merely a
2712. preceding link in the great orderly chain of events flowing from the
2713. creative energy of THE ALL. There is a continuity between all events
2714. precedent, consequent and subsequent. There is a relation existing
2715. between everything that has gone before, and everything that follows. A
2716. stone is dislodged from a mountain side and crashes through a roof of a
2717. cottage in the valley below. At first sight we regard this as a chance
2718. effect, but when we examine the matter we find a great chain of causes
2719. behind it. In the first place there was the rain which softened the
2720. earth supporting the stone and which allowed it to fall; then back of
2721. that was the influence of the sun, other rains, etc., which gradually
2722. disintegrated the piece of rock from a larger piece; then there were the
2723. causes which led to the formation of the mountain, and its upheaval by
2724. convulsions of nature, and so on ad infinitum. Then we might follow up
2725. the causes behind the rain, etc. Then we might consider the existence of
2726. the roof In short, we would soon find ourselves involved in a mesh of
2727. cause and effect, from which we would soon strive to extricate
  2728. ourselves.
  2729.
2730. Just as a man has two parents, and four grandparents, and eight
2731. great-grandparents, and sixteen great-great-grandparents, and so on
2732. until when, say, forty generations are calculated the numbers of
2733. ancestors run into many millions--so it is with the number of causes
2734. behind even the most trifling event or phenomena, such as the passage of
2735. a tiny speck of soot before your eye. It is not an easy matter to trace
2736. the bit of soot hack to the early period of the world's history when it
2737. formed a part of a massive tree-trunk, which was afterward converted
2738. into coal, and so on, until as the speck of soot it now passes before
2739. your vision on its way to other adventures. And a mighty chain of
2740. events, causes and effects, brought it to its present condition, and the
2741. later is but one of the chain of events which will go to produce other
2742. events hundreds of years from now. One of the series of events arising
2743. from the tiny bit of soot was the writing of these lines, which caused
  2744. the typesetter to perform certain work; the proofreader to do likewise;
2745. and which will arouse certain thoughts in your mind, and that of others,
2746. which in turn will affect others, and so on, and on, and on, beyond the
2747. ability of man to think further-and all from the passage of a tiny bit
2748. of soot, all of which shows the relativity and association of things,
2749. and the further fact that "there is no great; there is no small, in the
  2750. mind that causeth all."
  2751.
2752. Stop to think a moment. If a certain man had not met a certain maid,
2753. away back in the dim period of the Stone Age--you who are now reading
2754. these lines would not now be here. And if, perhaps, the same couple had
2755. failed to meet, we who now write these lines would not now be here. And
2756. the very act of writing, on our part, and the act of reading, on yours,
2757. will affect not only the respective lives of yourself and ourselves, but
2758. will also have a direct, or indirect, affect upon many other people now
2759. living and who will live in the ages to come. Every thought we think,
2760. every act we perform, has its direct and indirect results which fit into
2761. the great chain of Cause and Effect.
  2762.
2763. We do not wish to enter into a consideration of Free Will, or
2764. Determinism, in this work, for various reasons. Among the many reasons,
2765. is the principal one that neither side of the controversy is entirely
2766. right-in fact, both sides are partially right, according to the Hermetic
2767. Teachings. The Principle of Polarity shows that both are but Half-Truths
2768. the opposing poles of Truth. The Teachings are that a man may be both
2769. Free and yet bound by Necessity, depending upon the meaning of the
2770. terms, and the height of Truth from which the matter is examined. The
2771. ancient writers express the matter thus: "The further the creation is
2772. from the Centre, the more it is bound; the nearer the Centre it reaches,
2773. the nearer Free is it."
  2774.
2775. The majority of people are more or less the slaves of heredity,
2776. environment, etc., and manifest very little Freedom. They are swayed by
2777. the opinions, customs and thoughts of the outside world, and also by
2778. their emotions, feelings, moods, etc. They manifest no Mastery, worthy
2779. of the name. They indignantly repudiate this assertion, saying, "Why, I
2780. certainly am free to act and do as I please--I do just what I want to
2781. do," but they fail to explain whence arise the "want to" and "as I
2782. please." What makes them "want to" do one thing in preference to
2783. another; what makes them "please" to do this, and not do that? Is there
2784. no "because" to their "pleasing" and "Wanting"? The Master can change
2785. these "pleases" and "wants" into others at the opposite end of the
2786. mental pole. He is able to "Will to will," instead of to will because
2787. some feeling, mood, emotion, or environmental suggestion arouses a
2788. tendency or desire within him so to do.
  2789.
2790. The majority of people are carried along like the falling stone,
2791. obedient to environment, outside influences and internal moods, desires,
2792. etc., not to speak of the desires and wills of others stronger than
2793. themselves, heredity, environment, and suggestion, carrying them along
2794. without resistance on their part, or the exercise of the Will. Moved
2795. like the pawns on the checkerboard of life, they play their parts and
2796. are laid aside after the game is over. But the Masters, knowing the
2797. rules of the game, rise above the plane of material life, and placing
2798. themselves in touch with the higher powers of their nature, dominate
2799. their own moods, characters, qualities, and polarity, as well as the
2800. environment surrounding them and thus become Movers in the game, instead
2801. of Pawns-Causes instead of Effects. The Masters do not escape the
2802. Causation of the higher planes, but fall in with the higher laws, and
2803. thus master circumstances on the lower plane. They thus form a conscious
2804. part of the Law, instead of being mere blind instruments. While they
2805. Serve on the Higher Planes, they Rule on the Material Plane.
  2806.
2807. But, on higher and on lower, the Law is always in operation. There is no
2808. such thing as Chance. The blind goddess has been abolished by Reason. We
2809. are able to see now, with eyes made clear by knowledge, that everything
2810. is governed by Universal Law-that the infinite number of laws are but
2811. manifestations of the One Great Law-the LAW which is THE ALL. It is true
2812. indeed that not a sparrow drops unnoticed by the Mind of THE AL--that
2813. even the hairs on our head are numbered--as the scriptures have said
2814. There is nothing outside of Law; nothing that happens contrary to it.
2815. And yet, do not make the mistake of supposing that Man is but a blind
2816. automaton-far from that. The Hermetic Teachings are that Man may use Law
2817. to overcome laws, and that the higher will always prevail against the
2818. lower, until at last he has reached the stage in which he seeks refuge
2819. in the LAW itself, and laughs the phenomenal laws to scorn. Are you able
2820. to grasp the inner meaning of this?
  2821.
  2822.
  2823.
  2824. CHAPTER XIII
  2825.
  2826. GENDER
  2827.
2828.     "Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine
2829.     and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all
  2830.     planes."--The Kybalion.
  2831.
2832. The great Seventh Hermetic Principle--the Principle of Gender-embodies
2833. the truth that there is Gender manifested in everything-that the
2834. Masculine and Feminine principles are ever present and active in all
2835. phases of phenomena, on each and every plane of life. At this point we
2836. think it well to call your attention to the fact that Gender, in its
2837. Hermetic sense, and Sex in the ordinarily accepted use of the term, are
  2838. not the same.
  2839.
2840. The word "Gender" is derived from the Latin root meaning "to beget; to
2841. procreate; to generate; to create; to produce." A moment's consideration
2842. will show you that the word has a much broader and more general meaning
2843. than the term "Sex," the latter referring to the physical distinctions
2844. between male and female living things. Sex is merely a manifestation of
2845. Gender on a certain plane of the Great Physical Plane--the plane of
2846. organic life. We wish to impress this distinction upon your minds, for
2847. the reason that certain writers, who have acquired a smattering of the
2848. Hermetic Philosophy, have sought to identify this Seventh Hermetic
2849. Principle with wild and fanciful, and often reprehensible, theories and
  2850. teachings regarding Sex.
  2851.
2852. The office of Gender is solely that of creating, producing, generating,
2853. etc., and its manifestations are visible on every plane of phenomena. It
2854. is somewhat difficult to produce proofs of this along scientific lines,
2855. for the reason that science has not as yet recognized this Principle as
2856. of universal application. But still some proofs are forthcoming from
2857. scientific sources. In the first place, we find a distinct manifestation
2858. of the Principle of Gender among the corpuscles, ions, or electrons,
2859. which constitute the basis of Matter as science now knows the latter,
2860. and which by forming certain combinations form the Atom, which until
2861. lately was regarded as final and indivisible.
  2862.
2863. The latest word of science is that the atom is composed of a multitude
2864. of corpuscles, electrons, or ions (the various names being applied by
2865. different authorities) revolving around each other and vibrating at a
2866. high degree and intensity. But the accompanying statement is made that
2867. the formation of the atom is really due to the clustering of negative
2868. corpuscles around a positive one---the positive corpuscles seeming to
2869. exert a certain influence upon the negative corpuscles, causing the
2870. latter to assume certain combinations and thus "create" or "generate" an
2871. atom. This is in line with the most ancient Hermetic Teachings, which
2872. have always identified the Masculine principle of Gender with the
2873. "Positive," and the Feminine with the "Negative" Poles of Electricity
  2874. (so called).
  2875.
2876. Now a word at this point regarding this identification. The public mind
2877. has formed an entirely erroneous impression regarding the qualities of
2878. the so-called "Negative" pole of electrified or magnetized Matter. The
2879. terms Positive and Negative are very wrongly applied to this phenomenon
2880. by science. The word Positive means something real and strong, as
2881. compared with a Negative unreality or weakness. Nothing is further from
2882. the real facts of electrical phenomenon. The so-called Negative pole of
2883. the battery is really the pole in and by which the generation or
2884. production of new forms and energies is manifested. There is nothing
2885. "negative" about it. The best scientific authorities now use the word
2886. "Cathode" in place of "Negative," the word Cathode coming from the Greek
2887. root meaning "descent; the path of generation, etc," From the Cathode
2888. pole emerge the swarm of electrons or corpuscles; from the same pole
2889. emerge those wonderful "rays" which have revolutionized scientific
2890. conceptions during the past decade. The Cathode pole is the Mother of
2891. all of the strange phenomena which have rendered useless the old
2892. textbooks, and which have caused many long accepted theories to be
2893. relegated to the scrap-pile of scientific speculation. The Cathode, or
2894. Negative Pole, is the Mother Principle of Electrical Phenomena, and of
2895. the finest forms of matter as yet known to science. So you see we are
2896. justified in refusing to use the term "Negative" in our consideration of
2897. the subject, and in insisting upon substituting the word "Feminine" for
2898. the old term. The facts of the case bear us out in this, without taking
2899. the Hermetic Teachings into consideration. And so we shall use the word
2900. "Feminine" in the place of "Negative" in speaking of that pole of
  2901. activity.
  2902.
2903. The latest scientific teachings are that the creative corpuscles or
2904. electrons are Feminine (science says "they are composed of negative
2905. electricity"-we say they are composed of Feminine energy). A Feminine
2906. corpuscle becomes detached from, or rather leaves, a Masculine
2907. corpuscle, and starts on a new career. It actively seeks a union with a
2908. Masculine corpuscle, being urged thereto by the natural impulse to
2909. create new forms of Matter or Energy. One writer goes so far as to use
2910. the term "it at once seeks, of its own volition, a union," etc. This
2911. detachment and uniting form the basis of the greater part of the
2912. activities of the chemical world. When the Feminine corpuscle unites
2913. with a Masculine corpuscle, a certain process is begun. The Feminine
2914. particles vibrate rapidly under the influence of the Masculine energy,
2915. and circle rapidly around the latter. The result is the birth of a new
2916. atom. This new atom is really composed of a union of the Masculine and
2917. Feminine electrons, or corpuscles, but when the union is formed the atom
2918. is a separate thing, having certain properties, but no longer
2919. manifesting the property of free electricity. The process of detachment
2920. or separation of the Feminine electrons is called "ionization." These
2921. electrons, or corpuscles, are the most active workers in Nature's field.
2922. Arising from their unions, or combinations, manifest the varied
2923. phenomena of light, heat, electricity, magnetism, attraction,
2924. repulsion, chemical affinity and the reverse, and similar phenomena. And
2925. all this arises from the operation of the Principle of Gender on the
  2926. plane of Energy.
  2927.
2928. The part of the Masculine principle seems to be that of directing a
2929. certain inherent energy toward the Feminine principle, and thus starting
2930. into activity the creative processes. But the Feminine principle is the
2931. one always doing the active creative work-and this is so on all planes.
2932. And yet, each principle is incapable of operative energy without the
2933. assistance of the other. In some of the forms of life, the two
2934. principles are combined in one organism. For that matter, everything in
2935. the organic world manifests both genders--there is always the Masculine
2936. present in the Feminine form, and the Feminine form.  The Hermetic
2937. Teachings include much regarding the operation of the two principles of
2938. Gender in the production and manifestation of various forms of energy,
2939. etc., but we do not deem it expedient to go into detail regarding the
2940. same at this point, because we are unable to back up the same with
2941. scientific proof, for the reason that science has not as yet progressed
2942. thus far. But the example we have given you of the phenomena of the
2943. electrons or corpuscles will show you that science is on the right path,
2944. and will also give you a general idea of the underlying principles.
  2945.
2946. Some leading scientific investigators have announced their belief that
2947. in the formation of crystals there was to be found something that
2948. corresponded to "sex-activity" which is another straw showing the
2949. direction the scientific winds are blowing. And each year will bring
2950. other facts to corroborate the correctness of the Hermetic Principle of
2951. Gender. It will be found that Gender is in constant operation and
2952. manifestation in the field of inorganic matter, and in the field of
2953. Energy or Force. Electricity is now generally regarded as the
2954. "Something" into which all other forms of energy seem to melt or
2955. dissolve. The "Electrical Theory of the Universe" is the latest
2956. scientific doctrine, and is growing rapidly in popularity and
2957. general acceptance. And it thus follows that if we are able to discover
2958. in the phenomena of electricity-even at the very root and source of its
2959. manifestations a clear and unmistakable evidence of the presence of
2960. Gender and its activities, we are justified in asking you to believe
2961. that science at last has offered proofs of the existence in all
2962. universal phenomena of that great Hermetic Principle-the Principle of
  2963. Gender.
  2964.
2965. It is not necessary to take up your time with the well known phenomena
2966. of the "attraction and repulsion" of the atoms; chemical affinity; the
2967. "loves and hates" of the atomic particles; the attraction or cohesion
2968. between the molecules of matter. These facts are too well known to need
2969. extended comment from us. But, have you ever considered that all of
2970. these things are manifestations of the Gender Principle? Can you not see
2971. that the phenomena is "on all fours" with that of the corpuscles or
2972. electrons? And more than this, can you not see the reasonableness of the
2973. Hermetic Teachings which assert that the very Law of Gravitation-that
2974. strange attraction by reason of which all particles and bodies of matter
2975. in the universe tend toward each other is but another manifestation of
2976. the Principle of Gender, which operates in the direction of attracting
2977. the Masculine to the Feminine energies, and vice versa? We cannot offer
2978. you scientific proof of this at this time-but examine the phenomena in
2979. the light of the Hermetic Teachings on the subject, and see if you have
2980. not a better working hypothesis than any offered by physical science.
2981. Submit all physical phenomena to the test, and you will discern the
2982. Principle of Gender ever in evidence.
  2983.
2984. Let us now pass on to a consideration of the operation of the Principle
2985. on the Mental Plane. Many interesting features are there awaiting
  2986. examination.
  2987.
  2988.
  2989.
  2990. CHAPTER XIV
  2991.
  2992. MENTAL GENDER
  2993.
2994. Students of psychology who have followed the modern trend of thought
2995. along the lines of mental phenomena are struck by the persistence of the
2996. dual-mind idea which has manifested itself so strongly during the past
2997. ten or fifteen years, and which has given rise to a number of plausible
2998. theories regarding the nature and constitution of these "two minds." The
2999. late Thomson J. Hudson attained great popularity in 1893 by advancing
3000. his well-known theory of the "objective and subjective minds" which he
3001. held existed in every individual. Other writers have attracted almost
3002. equal attention by the theories regarding the "conscious and
3003. subconscious minds"; the "voluntary and involuntary minds"; "the active
3004. and passive minds," etc., etc. The theories of the various writers
3005. differ from each other, but there remains the underlying principle of
  3006. "the duality of mind."
  3007.
3008. The student of the Hermetic Philosophy is tempted to smile when he reads
3009. and hears of these many "new theories" regarding the duality of mind,
3010. each school adhering tenaciously to its own pet theories, and each
3011. claiming to have "discovered the truth." The student turns back the
3012. pages of occult history, and away back in the dim beginnings of occult
3013. teachings he finds references to the ancient Hermetic doctrine of the
3014. Principle of Gender on the Mental Plane-the manifestation of Mental
3015. Gender. And examining further he finds that the ancient philosophy took
3016. cognizance of the phenomenon of the "dual mind," and accounted for it by
3017. the theory of Mental Gender. This idea of Mental Gender may be explained
3018. in a few words to students who are familiar with the modern theories
3019. just alluded to. The Masculine Principle of Mind corresponds to the
3020. so-called Objective Mind; Conscious Mind; Voluntary Mind; Active Mind,
3021. etc. And the Feminine Principle of Mind corresponds to the so-called
3022. Subjective Mind; Sub-conscious Mind; Involuntary Mind; Passive Mind,
3023. etc. Of course the Hermetic Teachings do not agree with the many modern
3024. theories regarding the nature of the two phases of mind, nor does it
3025. admit many of the facts claimed for the two respective aspects--some of
3026. the said theories and claims being very far-fetched and incapable of
3027. standing the test of experiment and demonstration.  We point to the
3028. phases of agreement merely for the purpose of helping the student to
3029. assimilate his previously acquired knowledge with the teachings of the
3030. Hermetic Philosophy. Students of Hudson will notice the statement at the
3031. beginning of his second chapter of "The Law of Psychic Phenomena," that:
3032. "The mystic jargon of the Hermetic philosophers discloses the same
3033. general idea" i.e., the duality of mind. If Dr. Hudson had taken
3034. the time and trouble to decipher a little of "the mystic jargon of the
3035. Hermetic Philosophy," he might have received much light upon the subject
3036. of "the dual mind"--but then, perhaps, his most interesting work might
3037. not have been written. Let us now consider the Hermetic Teachings
  3038. regarding Mental Gender.
  3039.
3040. The Hermetic Teachers impart their instruction regarding this subject by
3041. bidding their students examine the report of their consciousness
3042. regarding their Self. The students are bidden to turn their attention
3043. inward upon the Self dwelling within each. Each student is led to see
3044. that his consciousness gives him first a report of the existence of his
3045. Self-the report is "I Am." This at first seems to be the final words
3046. from the consciousness, but a little further examination discloses the
3047. fact that this "I Am" may be separated or split into two distinct parts,
3048. or aspects, which while working in unison and in conjunction, yet,
3049. nevertheless, may be separated in consciousness.
  3050.
3051. While at first there seems to be only an "I" existing, a more careful
3052. and closer examination reveals the fact that there exists an "I" and a
3053. "Me." These mental twins differ in their characteristics and nature, and
3054. an examination of their nature and the phenomena arising from the same
3055. will throw much light upon many of the problems of mental influence.
  3056.
3057. Let us begin with a consideration of the Me, which is usually mistaken
3058. for the I by the student, until he presses the inquiry a little further
3059. back into the recesses of consciousness. A man thinks of his Self (in
3060. its aspect of Me) as being composed of certain feelings, tastes likes,
3061. dislikes, habits, peculiar ties, characteristics, etc., all of which go
3062. to make up his personality, or the "Self" known to himself and others.
  3063. He knows that these emotions and feelings change; are born and die away;
3064. are subject to the Principle of Rhythm, and the Principle of Polarity,
3065. which take him from one extreme of feeling to another. He also thinks of
3066. the "Me" as being certain knowledge gathered together in his mind, and
3067. thus forming a part of himself. This is the "Me" of a man.
  3068.
3069. But we have proceeded too hastily. The "Me" of many men may be said to
3070. consist largely of their consciousness of the body and their physical
3071. appetites, etc. Their consciousness being largely bound up with their
3072. bodily nature, they practically "live there." Some men even go so far as
3073. to regard their personal apparel as a part of their "Me" and actually
3074. seem to consider it a part of themselves. A writer has humorously said
3075. that "men consist of three parts--soul, body and clothes." These
3076. "clothes conscious" people would lose their personality if divested of
3077. their clothing by savages upon the occasion of a shipwreck. But even
3078. many who are not so closely bound up with the idea of personal raiment
3079. stick closely to the consciousness of their bodies being their "Me" They
3080. cannot conceive of a Self independent of the body. Their mind seems to
3081. them to be practically "a something belonging to" their body-which in
3082. many cases it is indeed.
  3083.
3084. But as man rises in the scale of consciousness he is able to disentangle
3085. his "Me" from his idea of body, and is able to think of his body as
3086. "belonging to" the mental part of him. But even then he is very apt to
3087. identify the "Me" entirely with the mental states, feelings, etc., which
3088. he feels to exist within him. He is very apt to consider these internal
3089. states as identical with himself, instead of their being simply "things"
3090. produced by some part of his mentality, and existing within him--of him,
3091. and in him, but still not "himself." He sees that he may change these
3092. internal states of feelings by all effort of will, and that he may
3093. produce a feeling or state of an exactly opposite nature, in the same
3094. way, and yet the same "Me" exists. And so after a while he is able to
3095. set aside these various mental states, emotions, feelings, habits,
3096. qualities, characteristics, and other personal mental belongings--he is
3097. able to set them aside in the "not-me" collection of curiosities and
3098. encumbrances, as well as valuable possessions. This requires much mental
3099. concentration and power of mental analysis on the part of the student.
3100. But still the task is possible for the advanced student, and even those
3101. not so far advanced are able to see, in the imagination, how the process
  3102. may be performed.
  3103.
3104. After this laying-aside process has been performed, the student will
3105. find himself in conscious possession of a "Self" which may be considered
3106. in its "I" and "Me" dual aspects. The "Me" will be felt to be a
3107. Something mental in which thoughts, ideas, emotions, feelings, and other
3108. mental states may be produced. It may be considered as the "mental
3109. womb," as the ancients styled it-capable of generating mental offspring.
3110. It reports to the consciousness as a "Me" with latent powers of creation
3111. and generation of mental progeny of all sorts and kinds. Its powers of
3112. creative energy are felt to be enormous. But still it seems to be
3113. conscious that it must receive some form of energy from either its "I"
3114. companion, or else from some other "I" ere it is able to bring into
3115. being its mental creations. This consciousness brings with it a
3116. realization of an enormous capacity for mental work and creative
  3117. ability.
  3118.
3119. But the student soon finds that this is not all that he finds within his
3120. inner consciousness. He finds that there exists a mental Something which
3121. is able to Will that the "Me" act along certain creative lines, and
3122. which is also able to stand aside and witness the mental creation. This
3123. part of himself he is taught to call his "I." He is able to rest in its
3124. consciousness at will. He finds there not a consciousness of an ability
3125. to generate and actively create, in the sense of the gradual process
3126. attendant upon mental operations, but rather a sense and consciousness
3127. of an ability to project an energy from the "I" to the "Me"--a process
3128. of "willing" that the mental creation begin and proceed. He also finds
3129. that the "I" is able to stand aside and witness the operations of the
3130. "Me's" mental creation and generation. There is this dual aspect in the
3131. mind of every person. The "I" represents the Masculine Principle of
3132. Mental Gender-the "Me" represents the Female Principle. The "I"
3133. represents the Aspect of Being; the "Me" the Aspect of Becoming. You
3134. will notice that the Principle of Correspondence operates on this plane
3135. just as it does upon the great plane upon which the creation of
3136. Universes is performed. The two are similar in kind, although
3137. vastly different in degree. "As above, so below; as below, so above."
  3138.
3139. These aspects of mind-the Masculine and Feminine Principles-the "I" and
3140. the "Me"-considered in connection with the well-known mental and psychic
3141. phenomena, give the master-key to these dimly known regions of mental
3142. operation and manifestation. The principle of Mental Gender gives the
3143. truth underlying the whole field of the phenomena of mental influence,
  3144. etc.
  3145.
3146. The tendency of the Feminine Principle is always in the direction of
3147. receiving impressions, while the tendency of the Masculine Principle is
3148. always in the direction of giving, out or expressing. The Feminine
3149. Principle has much more varied field of operation than has the Masculine
3150. Principle. The Feminine Principle conducts the work of generating new
3151. thoughts, concepts, ideas, including the work of the imagination. The
3152. Masculine Principle contents itself with the work of the "Will" in its
3153. varied phases. And yet, without the active aid of the Will of the
3154. Masculine Principle, the Feminine Principle is apt to rest content with
3155. generating mental images which are the result of impressions received
3156. from outside, instead of producing original mental creations.
  3157.
3158. Persons who can give continued attention and thought to a subject
3159. actively employ both of the Mental Principles-the Feminine in the work
3160. of the mental generation, and the Masculine Will in stimulating and
3161. energizing the creative portion of the mind. The majority of persons
3162. really employ the Masculine Principle but little, and are content to
3163. live according to the thoughts and ideas instilled into the "Me" from
3164. the "I" of other minds. But it is not our purpose to dwell upon this
3165. phase of the subject, which may be studied from any good text-book upon
3166. psychology, with the key that we have given you regarding Mental Gender.
  3167.
3168. The student of Psychic Phenomena is aware of the wonderful phenomena
3169. classified under the head of Telepathy; Thought Transference; Mental
3170. Influence; Suggestion; Hypnotism, etc. Many have sought for an
3171. explanation of these varied phases of phenomena under the theories of
3172. the various "dual mind" teachers. And in a measure they are right, for
3173. there is clearly a manifestation of two distinct phases of mental
3174. activity. But if such students will consider these "dual minds" in the
3175. light of the Hermetic Teachings regarding Vibrations and Mental Gender,
3176. they will see that the long sought for key is at hand.
  3177.
3178. In the phenomena of Telepathy it is seen how the Vibratory Energy of the
3179. Masculine Principle is projected toward the Feminine Principle of
3180. another person, and the latter takes the seed-thought and allows it to
3181. develop into maturity. In the same way Suggestion and Hypnotism
3182. operates. The Masculine Principle of the person giving the suggestions
3183. directs a stream of Vibratory Energy or Will-Power toward the Feminine
3184. Principle of the other person, and the latter accepting it makes it its
3185. own and acts and thinks accordingly. An idea thus lodged in the mind of
3186. another person grows and develops, and in time is regarded as the
3187. rightful mental offspring of the individual, whereas it is in reality
3188. like the cuckoo egg placed in the sparrows nest, where it destroys the
3189. rightful offspring and makes itself at home. The normal method is for
3190. the Masculine and Feminine Principles in a person's mind to co-ordinate
3191. and act harmoniously in conjunction with each other, but, unfortunately,
3192. the Masculine Principle in the average person is too lazy to act-the
3193. display of Will-Power is too slight-and the consequence is that such
3194. persons are ruled almost entirely by the minds and wills of other
3195. persons, whom they allow to do their thinking and willing for them.
3196. How few original thoughts or original actions are performed by the
3197. average person? Are not the majority of persons mere shadows and echoes
3198. of others having stronger wills or minds than themselves? The trouble is
3199. that the average person dwells almost altogether in his "Me"
3200. consciousness and does not realize that he has such a thing as an "I."
3201. He is polarized in his Feminine Principle of Mind, and the Masculine
3202. Principle, in which is lodged the Will, is allowed to remain inactive
  3203. and not employed.
  3204.
3205. The strong men and women of the world invariably manifest the Masculine
3206. Principle of Will, and their strength depends materially upon this fact.
3207. Instead of living upon the impressions made upon their minds by others,
3208. they dominate their own minds by their Will, obtaining the kind of
3209. mental images desired, and moreover dominate the minds of others
3210. likewise, in the same manner. Look at the strong people, how they manage
3211. to implant their seed-thoughts in the minds of the masses of the people,
3212. thus causing the latter to think thoughts in accordance with the desires
3213. and wills of the strong individuals. This is why the masses of people
3214. are such sheeplike creatures, never originating an idea of their own,
3215. nor using their own powers of mental activity.
  3216.
3217. The manifestation of Mental Gender may be noticed all around us in
3218. everyday life. The magnetic persons are those who are able to use the
3219. Masculine Principle in the way of impressing their ideas upon others.
3220. The actor who makes people weep or cry as he wills, is employing this
3221. principle. And so is the successful orator, statesman, preacher, writer
3222. or other people who are before the public attention. The peculiar
3223. influence exerted by some people over others is due to the manifestation
3224. of Mental Gender, along the Vibrational lines above indicated. In this
3225. principle lies the secret of personal magnetism, personal influence,
3226. fascination, etc., as well as the phenomena generally grouped under the
  3227. name of Hypnotism.
  3228.
3229. The student who has familiarized himself with the phenomena generally
3230. spoken of as "psychic" will have discovered the important part played in
3231. the said phenomena by that force which science has styled "Suggestion,"
3232. by which term is meant the process or method whereby an idea is
3233. transferred to, or "impressed upon" the mind of another, causing the
3234. second mind to act in accordance therewith. A correct understanding of
3235. Suggestion is necessary in order to intelligently comprehend the varied
3236. psychical phenomena which Suggestion underlies. But, still more is a
3237. knowledge of Vibration and Mental Gender necessary for the student of
3238. Suggestion. For the whole principle of Suggestion depends upon the
3239. principle of Mental Gender and Vibration.
  3240.
3241. It is customary for the writers and teachers of Suggestion to explain
3242. that it is the "objective or voluntary" mind which make the mental
3243. impression, or suggestion, upon the "subjective or involuntary" mind.
3244. But they do not describe the process or give us any analogy in nature
3245. whereby we may more readily comprehend the idea. But if you will think
3246. of the matter in the light of the Hermetic Teachings you will be able to
3247. see that the energizing of the Feminine Principle by the Vibratory
3248. Energy of the Masculine Principle Is in accordance to the universal laws
3249. of nature, and that the natural world affords countless analogies
3250. whereby the principle may be understood. In fact, the Hermetic Teachings
3251. show that the very creation of the Universe follows the same law, and
3252. that in all creative manifestations, upon the planes of the spiritual,
3253. the mental, and the physical, there is always in operation this
3254. principle of Gender-this manifestation of the Masculine and the Feminine
3255. Principles. "As above, so below; as below, so above." And more than
3256. this, when the principle of Mental Gender is once grasped and
3257. understood, the varied phenomena of psychology at once becomes capable
3258. of intelligent classification and study, instead of being very much in
3259. the dark. The principle "works out" in practice, because it is based
3260. upon the immutable universal laws of life.
  3261.
3262. We shall not enter into an extended discussion of, or description of,
3263. the varied phenomena of mental influence or psychic activity. There are
3264. many books, many of them quite good, which have been written and
3265. published on this subject of late years. The main facts stated in these
3266. various books are correct, although the several writers have attempted
3267. to explain the phenomena by various pet theories of their own. The
3268. student may acquaint himself with these matters, and by using the theory
3269. of Mental Gender he will be able to bring order out of the chaos of
3270. conflicting theory and teachings, and may, moreover, readily make
3271. himself a master of the subject if he be so inclined. The purpose of
3272. this work is not to give an extended account of psychic phenomena but
3273. rather to give to the student a master-key whereby He may unlock the
3274. many doors leading into the parts of the Temple of Knowledge which he
3275. may wish to explore. We feel that in this consideration of the teachings
3276. of The Kybalion, one may find an explanation which will serve to clear
3277. away many perplexing difficulties--a key that will unlock many doors.
3278. What is the use of going into detail regarding all of the many features
3279. of psychic phenomena and mental science, provided we place in the hands
3280. of the student the means whereby he may acquaint himself fully regarding
3281. any phase of the subject which may interest him. With the aid of The
3282. Kybalion one may go through any occult library anew, the old Light from
3283. Egypt illuminating many dark pages, and obscure subjects. That is the
3284. purpose of this book. We do not come expounding a new philosophy, but
3285. rather furnishing the outlines of a great world-old teaching which will
3286. make clear the teachings of others-which will serve as a Great
3287. Reconciler of differing: theories, and opposing doctrines.
  3288.

  3291. CHAPTER XV
  3292.
  3293. HERMETIC AXIOMS
  3294.
3295.     "The possession of Knowledge, unless accompanied by a
3296.     manifestation and expression in Action, is like the
3297.     hoarding of precious metals-a vain and foolish thing.
3298.     Knowledge, like wealth, is intended for Use. The Law of
3299.     Use is Universal, and he who violates it suffers by
3300.     reason of his conflict with natural forces."--The Kybalion.
  3301.
3302. The Hermetic Teachings, while always having been kept securely locked up
3303. in the minds of the fortunate possessors thereof, for reasons which we
3304. have already stated, were never intended to be merely stored away and
3305. secreted. The Law of Use is dwelt upon in the Teachings, as you may see
3306. by reference to the above quotation from The Kybalion, which states it
3307. forcibly. Knowledge without Use and Expression is a vain thing, bringing
3308. no good to its possessor, or to the race. Beware of Mental Miserliness,
3309. and express into Action that which you have learned. Study the Axioms
3310. and Aphorisms, but practice them also.
  3311.
3312. We give below some of the more important Hermetic Axioms, from The
3313. Kybalion, with a few comments added to each. Make these your own, and
3314. practice and use them, for they are not really your own until you have
  3315. Used them.
  3316.
3317.     "To change your mood or mental state--change your
  3318.     vibration."--The Kybalion.
  3319.
3320. One may change his mental vibrations by an effort of Will, in the
3321. direction of deliberately fixing the Attention upon a more desirable
3322. state. Will directs the Attention, and Attention changes the Vibration.
3323. Cultivate the Art of Attention, by means of the Will, and you have
3324. solved the secret of the Mastery of Moods and Mental States.
  3325.
3326.     "To destroy an undesirable rate of mental vibration,
3327.     put into operation the principle of Polarity and
3328.     concentrate upon the opposite pole to that which
3329.     you desire to suppress. Kill out the undesirable by
  3330.     changing its polarity."--The Kybalion.
  3331.
3332. This is one of the most important of the Hermetic Formulas. It is based
3333. upon true scientific principles. We have shown you that a mental state
3334. and its opposite were merely the two poles of one thing, and that by
3335. Mental Transmutation the polarity might be reversed. This Principle is
3336. known to modern psychologists, who apply it to the breaking up of
3337. undesirable habits by bidding their students concentrate upon the
3338. opposite quality. If you are possessed of Fear, do not waste time trying
3339. to "kill out" Fear, but instead cultivate the quality of Courage, and
3340. the Fear will disappear. Some writers have expressed this idea most
3341. forcibly by using the illustration of the dark room. You do not have to
3342. shovel out or sweep out the Darkness, but by merely opening the shutters
3343. and letting in the Light the Darkness has disappeared. To kill out a
3344. Negative quality, concentrate upon the Positive Pole of that same
3345. quality, and the vibrations will gradually change from Negative to
3346. Positive, until finally you will become polarized on the
3347. Positive pole instead of the Negative. The reverse is also true, as many
3348. have found out to their sorrow, when they have allowed themselves to
3349. vibrate too constantly on the Negative pole of things. By changing your
3350. polarity you may master your moods, change your mental states, remake
3351. your disposition, and build up character. Much of the Mental Mastery of
3352. the advanced Hermetics is due to this application of Polarity, which is
3353. one of the important aspects of Mental Transmutation. Remember the
3354. Hermetic Axiom (quoted previously), which says:
  3355.
3356.     "Mind (as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted
3357.     from state to state; degree to degree, condition to
3358.     condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration."--The Kybalion.
  3359.
3360. The mastery of Polarization is the mastery of the fundamental principles
3361. of Mental Transmutation or Mental Alchemy, for unless one acquires the
3362. art of changing his own polarity, he will be unable to affect his
3363. environment. An understanding of this principle will enable one to
3364. change his own Polarity, as well as that of others, if he will but
3365. devote the time, care, study and practice necessary to master the art.
3366. The principle is true, but the results obtained depend upon the
3367. persistent patience and practice of the student.
  3368.
3369.     "Rhythm may be neutralized by an application of the Art
  3370.     of Polarization."--The Kybalion.
  3371.
3372. As we have explained in previous chapters, the Hermetists hold that the
3373. Principle of Rhythm manifests on the Mental Plane as well as on the
3374. Physical Plane, and that the bewildering succession of moods, feelings,
3375. emotions, and other mental states, are due to the backward and forward
3376. swing of the mental pendulum, which carries us from one extreme of
3377. feeling to the other. The Hermetists also teach that the Law of
3378. Neutralization enables one, to a great extent, to overcome the operation
3379. of Rhythm in consciousness. As we have explained, there is a Higher
3380. Plane of Consciousness, as well as the ordinary Lower Plane, and the
3381. Master by rising mentally to the Higher Plane causes the swing of the
3382. mental pendulum to manifest on the Lower Plane, and he, dwelling on his
3383. Higher Plane, escapes the consciousness of the swing backward. This is
3384. effected by polarizing on the Higher Self, and thus raising the mental
3385. vibrations of the Ego above those of the ordinary plane of
3386. consciousness. It is akin to rising above a thing and allowing it to
3387. pass beneath you. The advanced Hermetist polarizes himself at the
3388. Positive Pole of his Being-the "I Am" pole rather than the pole of
3389. personality and by "refusing" and "denying" the operation of Rhythm,
3390. raises himself above its plane of consciousness, and standing firm in
3391. his Statement of Being he allows the pendulum to swing back on the Lower
3392. Plane without changing his Polarity. This is accomplished by all
3393. individuals who have attained any degree of self-mastery, whether
3394. they understand the law or not. Such persons simply "refuse" to allow
3395. themselves to be swung back by the pendulum of mood and emotion, and by
3396. steadfastly affirming the superiority they remain polarized on the
3397. Positive pole. The Master, of course, attains a far greater degree of
3398. proficiency, because he understands the law which he is overcoming by a
3399. higher law, and by the use of his Will he attains a degree of Poise and
3400. Mental Steadfastness almost impossible of belief on the part of those
3401. who allow themselves to be swung backward and forward by the mental
3402. pendulum of moods and feelings.
  3403.
3404. Remember always, however, that you do not really destroy the Principle
3405. of Rhythm, for that is indestructible. You simply overcome one law by
3406. counter-balancing it with another and thus maintain an equilibrium. The
3407. laws of balance and counter-balance are in operation on the mental as
3408. well as on the physical planes, and an understanding of these laws
3409. enables one to seem to overthrow laws, whereas he is merely exerting a
  3410. counterbalance.
  3411.
3412.     "Nothing escapes the Principle of Cause and Effect,
3413.     but there are many Planes of Causation, and one may use
3414.     the laws of the higher to overcome the laws of the
  3415.     lower."--The Kybalion.
  3416.
3417. By an understanding of the practice of Polarization, the Hermetists rise
3418. to a higher plane of Causation and thus counter-balance the laws of the
3419. lower planes of Causation. By rising above the plane of ordinary Causes
3420. they become themselves, in a degree, Causes instead of being merely
3421. Caused. By being able to master their own moods and feelings, and by
3422. being able to neutralize Rhythm, as we have already explained, they are
3423. able to escape a great part of the operations of Cause and Effect on the
3424. ordinary plane. The masses of people are carried along, obedient to
3425. their environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than
3426. themselves; the effects of inherited tendencies; the suggestions of
3427. those about them; and other outward causes; which tend to move them
3428. about on the chess-board of life like mere pawns. By rising above these
3429. influencing causes, the advanced Hermetists seek a higher plane of
3430. mental action, and by dominating their moods, emotions, impulses and
3431. feelings, they create for themselves new characters, qualities and
3432. powers, by which they overcome their ordinary environment, and thus
3433. become practically players instead of mere Pawns. Such people help to
3434. play the game of life understandingly, instead of being moved about this
3435. way and that way by stronger influences and powers and wills. They use
3436. the Principle of Cause and Effect, instead of being used by
3437. it. Of course, even the highest are subject to the Principle as it
3438. manifests on the higher planes, but on the lower planes of activity,
3439. they are Masters instead of Slaves. As The Kybalion says:
  3440.
3441.     "The wise ones serve on the higher, but rule on the lower.
3442.     They obey the laws coming from above them, But on their
3443.     own plane, and those below them they rule and give orders.
3444.     And, yet, in so doing, they form a part of the Principle,
3445.     instead of opposing it. The wise man falls in with the Law,
3446.     and by understanding its movements he operates it instead
3447.     of being its blind slave. Just as does the skilled swimmer
3448.     turn this way and that way, going and coming as he will,
3449.     instead of being as the log which is carried here and
3450.     there--so is the wise man as compared to the ordinary
3451.     man--and yet both swimmer and log; wise man and fool,
3452.     are subject to Law. He who understands this is well on
3453.     the road to Mastery."--The Kybalion.
  3454.
3455. In conclusion let us again call your attention to the Hermetic Axiom:
  3456.
3457.     "True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art."--The Kybalion.
  3458.
3459. In the above axiom, the Hermetists teach that the great work of
3460. influencing one's environment is accomplished by Mental Power. The
3461. Universe being wholly mental, it follows that it may be ruled only by
3462. Mentality. And in this truth is to be found an explanation of all the
3463. phenomena and manifestations of the various mental powers which are
3464. attracting so much attention and study in these earlier years of the
3465. Twentieth Century. Back of and under the teachings of the various cults
3466. and schools, remains ever constant the Principle of the Mental Substance
3467. of the Universe. If the Universe be Mental in its substantial nature,
3468. then it follows that Mental Transmutation must change the conditions and
3469. phenomena of the Universe. If the Universe is Mental, then Mind must be
3470. the highest power affecting its phenomena. If this be understood then
3471. all the so-called "miracles" and "wonder-workings" are seen plainly for
  3472. what they are.
  3473.
3474.     "THE ALL is MIND; The Universe is Mental."--The Kybalion.

3520. To protect the Project Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting the free
3521. distribution of electronic works, by using or distributing this work
3522. (or any other work associated in any way with the phrase "Project
3523. Gutenberg"), you agree to comply with all the terms of the Full Project
3524. Gutenberg-tm License (available with this file or online at
  3525. http://gutenberg.net/license).
  3526.
  3527.
3528. Section 1.  General Terms of Use and Redistributing Project Gutenberg-tm
  3529. electronic works
  3530.
3531. 1.A.  By reading or using any part of this Project Gutenberg-tm
3532. electronic work, you indicate that you have read, understand, agree to
3533. and accept all the terms of this license and intellectual property
3534. (trademark/copyright) agreement.  If you do not agree to abide by all
3535. the terms of this agreement, you must cease using and return or destroy
3536. all copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in your possession.
3537. If you paid a fee for obtaining a copy of or access to a Project
3538. Gutenberg-tm electronic work and you do not agree to be bound by the
3539. terms of this agreement, you may obtain a refund from the person or
3540. entity to whom you paid the fee as set forth in paragraph 1.E.8.
  3541.
3542. 1.B.  "Project Gutenberg" is a registered trademark.  It may only be
3543. used on or associated in any way with an electronic work by people who
3544. agree to be bound by the terms of this agreement.  There are a few
3545. things that you can do with most Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works
3546. even without complying with the full terms of this agreement.  See
3547. paragraph 1.C below.  There are a lot of things you can do with Project
3548. Gutenberg-tm electronic works if you follow the terms of this agreement
3549. and help preserve free future access to Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
3550. works.  See paragraph 1.E below.
  3551.
3552. 1.C.  The Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation ("the Foundation"
3553. or PGLAF), owns a compilation copyright in the collection of Project
3554. Gutenberg-tm electronic works.  Nearly all the individual works in the
3555. collection are in the public domain in the United States.  If an
3556. individual work is in the public domain in the United States and you are
3557. located in the United States, we do not claim a right to prevent you from
3558. copying, distributing, performing, displaying or creating derivative
3559. works based on the work as long as all references to Project Gutenberg
3560. are removed.  Of course, we hope that you will support the Project
3561. Gutenberg-tm mission of promoting free access to electronic works by
3562. freely sharing Project Gutenberg-tm works in compliance with the terms of
3563. this agreement for keeping the Project Gutenberg-tm name associated with
3564. the work.  You can easily comply with the terms of this agreement by
3565. keeping this work in the same format with its attached full Project
3566. Gutenberg-tm License when you share it without charge with others.
  3567.
3568. 1.D.  The copyright laws of the place where you are located also govern
3569. what you can do with this work.  Copyright laws in most countries are in
3570. a constant state of change.  If you are outside the United States, check
3571. the laws of your country in addition to the terms of this agreement
3572. before downloading, copying, displaying, performing, distributing or
3573. creating derivative works based on this work or any other Project
3574. Gutenberg-tm work.  The Foundation makes no representations concerning
3575. the copyright status of any work in any country outside the United
  3576. States.
  3577.
3578. 1.E.  Unless you have removed all references to Project Gutenberg:
  3579.
3580. 1.E.1.  The following sentence, with active links to, or other immediate
3581. access to, the full Project Gutenberg-tm License must appear prominently
3582. whenever any copy of a Project Gutenberg-tm work (any work on which the
3583. phrase "Project Gutenberg" appears, or with which the phrase "Project
3584. Gutenberg" is associated) is accessed, displayed, performed, viewed,
  3585. copied or distributed:
  3586.
3587. This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with
3588. almost no restrictions whatsoever.  You may copy it, give it away or
3589. re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included
3590. with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.net
  3591.
3592. 1.E.2.  If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is derived
3593. from the public domain (does not contain a notice indicating that it is
3594. posted with permission of the copyright holder), the work can be copied
3595. and distributed to anyone in the United States without paying any fees
3596. or charges.  If you are redistributing or providing access to a work
3597. with the phrase "Project Gutenberg" associated with or appearing on the
3598. work, you must comply either with the requirements of paragraphs 1.E.1
3599. through 1.E.7 or obtain permission for the use of the work and the
3600. Project Gutenberg-tm trademark as set forth in paragraphs 1.E.8 or
  3601. 1.E.9.
  3602.
3603. 1.E.3.  If an individual Project Gutenberg-tm electronic work is posted
3604. with the permission of the copyright holder, your use and distribution
3605. must comply with both paragraphs 1.E.1 through 1.E.7 and any additional
3606. terms imposed by the copyright holder.  Additional terms will be linked
3607. to the Project Gutenberg-tm License for all works posted with the
3608. permission of the copyright holder found at the beginning of this work.
  3609.
3610. 1.E.4.  Do not unlink or detach or remove the full Project Gutenberg-tm
3611. License terms from this work, or any files containing a part of this
3612. work or any other work associated with Project Gutenberg-tm.
  3613.
3614. 1.E.5.  Do not copy, display, perform, distribute or redistribute this
3615. electronic work, or any part of this electronic work, without
3616. prominently displaying the sentence set forth in paragraph 1.E.1 with
3617. active links or immediate access to the full terms of the Project
  3618. Gutenberg-tm License.
  3619.
3620. 1.E.6.  You may convert to and distribute this work in any binary,
3621. compressed, marked up, nonproprietary or proprietary form, including any
3622. word processing or hypertext form.  However, if you provide access to or
3623. distribute copies of a Project Gutenberg-tm work in a format other than
3624. "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other format used in the official version
3625. posted on the official Project Gutenberg-tm web site (www.gutenberg.net),
3626. you must, at no additional cost, fee or expense to the user, provide a
3627. copy, a means of exporting a copy, or a means of obtaining a copy upon
3628. request, of the work in its original "Plain Vanilla ASCII" or other
3629. form.  Any alternate format must include the full Project Gutenberg-tm
3630. License as specified in paragraph 1.E.1.
  3631.
3632. 1.E.7.  Do not charge a fee for access to, viewing, displaying,
3633. performing, copying or distributing any Project Gutenberg-tm works
3634. unless you comply with paragraph 1.E.8 or 1.E.9.
  3635.
3636. 1.E.8.  You may charge a reasonable fee for copies of or providing
3637. access to or distributing Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works provided
  3638. that
  3639.
3640. - You pay a royalty fee of 20% of the gross profits you derive from
3641.      the use of Project Gutenberg-tm works calculated using the method
3642.      you already use to calculate your applicable taxes.  The fee is
3643.      owed to the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark, but he
3644.      has agreed to donate royalties under this paragraph to the
3645.      Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation.  Royalty payments
3646.      must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you
3647.      prepare (or are legally required to prepare) your periodic tax
3648.      returns.  Royalty payments should be clearly marked as such and
3649.      sent to the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation at the
3650.      address specified in Section 4, "Information about donations to
3651.      the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation."
  3652.
3653. - You provide a full refund of any money paid by a user who notifies
3654.      you in writing (or by e-mail) within 30 days of receipt that s/he

3656.      License.  You must require such a user to return or

  3660.
3661. - You provide, in accordance with paragraph 1.F.3, a full refund of any
3662.      money paid for a work or a replacement copy, if a defect in the

3664.      of receipt of the work.
  3665.
3666. - You comply with all other terms of this agreement for free
3667.      distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm works.
  3668.
3669. 1.E.9.  If you wish to charge a fee or distribute a Project Gutenberg-tm
3670. electronic work or group of works on different terms than are set
3671. forth in this agreement, you must obtain permission in writing from
3672. both the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation and Michael
3673. Hart, the owner of the Project Gutenberg-tm trademark.  Contact the
3674. Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.
  3675.
  3676. 1.F.
  3677.
3678. 1.F.1.  Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
3679. effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
3680. public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
3681. collection.  Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
3682. works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
3683. "Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
3684. corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
3685. property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
3686. computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
  3687. your equipment.
  3688.
3689. 1.F.2.  LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
3690. of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
3691. Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
3692. Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
3693. Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
3694. liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
3695. fees.  YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
3696. LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
3697. PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH F3.  YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
3698. TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
3699. LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
3700. INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
  3701. DAMAGE.
  3702.
3703. 1.F.3.  LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a

3706. written explanation to the person you received the work from.  If you
3707. received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
3708. your written explanation.  The person or entity that provided you with
3709. the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
3710. refund.  If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
3711. providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
3712. receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund.  If the second copy
3713. is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
3714. opportunities to fix the problem.
  3715.
3716. 1.F.4.  Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
3717. in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
3718. WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
3719. WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.
  3720.
3721. 1.F.5.  Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
3722. warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
3723. If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
3724. law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
3725. interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
3726. the applicable state law.  The invalidity or unenforceability of any
3727. provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.
  3728.
3729. 1.F.6.  INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
3730. trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone

3735. that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
3736. or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
3737. work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
3738. Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.
  3739.
  3740.
3741. Section  2.  Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm
  3742.
3743. Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
3744. electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
3745. including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers.  It exists
3746. because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
3747. people in all walks of life.
  3748.
3749. Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
3750. assistance they need, is critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
3751. goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
3752. remain freely available for generations to come.  In 2001, the Project
3753. Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
3754. and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
3755. To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
3756. and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
3757. and the Foundation web page at http://www.pglaf.org.

3786. Section 4.  Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
  3787. Literary Archive Foundation
  3788.
3789. Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
3790. spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
3791. increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
3792. freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
3793. array of equipment including outdated equipment.  Many small donations
3794. ($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
  3795. status with the IRS.
  3796.
3797. The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
3798. charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
3799. States.  Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
3800. considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
3801. with these requirements.  We do not solicit donations in locations
3802. where we have not received written confirmation of compliance.  To
3803. SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
  3804. particular state visit http://pglaf.org
  3805.
3806. While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
3807. have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
3808. against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
3809. approach us with offers to donate.
  3810.
3811. International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
3812. any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
3813. outside the United States.  U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.
  3814.
3815. Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
3816. methods and addresses.  Donations are accepted in a number of other
3817. ways including including checks, online payments and credit card
3818. donations.  To donate, please visit: http://pglaf.org/donate

3821. Section 5.  General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
  3822. works.
  3823.
3824. Professor Michael S. Hart is the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
3825. concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
3826. with anyone.  For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
3827. Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.
  3828.
  3829.
3830. Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
3831. editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
3832. unless a copyright notice is included.  Thus, we do not necessarily
3833. keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.
  3834.
  3835.
3836. Most people start at our Web site which has the main PG search facility:
  3837.
  3838.      http://www.gutenberg.net
  3839.
3840. This Web site includes information about Project Gutenberg-tm,
3841. including how to make donations to the Project Gutenberg Literary
3842. Archive Foundation, how to help produce our new eBooks, and how to
3843. subscribe to our email newsletter to hear about new eBooks.
