  13.  It is not so much a leak but a torrent.
  14. HMRC last week confirmed it received information
  15. from a whistleblower which contains the names
  16. of every HSBC customer with an account in Jersey.
  17.
  18.  HMRC investigators are sifting through 4,388
  19. UK names holding £699m. The list is said to be
  20. dominated by bankers and financiers working in
  21. the City of London. ... ...
  22.
  23.  The document cache threatens to be possibly
  24. the biggest tax investigation into a UK bank’s
  25. Jersey function ever mounted.
  26.
  27.  Jersey, a UK crown dependency, plays a vital
  28. role in what analysts refer to as an offshore
  29. spider web of secrecy funneling huge sums of
  30. cash away from international tax authorities.

  35.
  36.  These images were published by the Greek magazine
  37. Hot Doc. They show a partial listing of 2,059 bank
  38. accounts allegedly secretly held by Greeks in a
  39. Swiss branch of HSBC.

  42.
  43.  Hours after the magazine hit newsstands, Athens
  44. prosecutors issued a warrant for the arrest of
  45. Kostas Vaxevanis, the owner and editor of Hot Doc,
  46. “where names from the Lagarde list have been
  47. published,” the Athens police said in a statement
  48. on their Web site. They said he was sought on
  49. misdemeanor charges; the Greek media reported
  50. that the charges were related to violating the
  51. privacy of those on the list.

  54.
  55.  Mr. Vaxevanis says the list he published is
  56. the same one that was given by the then French
  57. finance minister Christine Lagarde to her Greek
  58. counterpart.
  59.
  60.  Some of those named, said to include many prominent
  61. Greeks, are suspected of using the accounts for
  62. tax evasion.
